  • 1. How to switch OS to another HD?
I'd like to switch W2K4 to another hard drive but have concerns. Current config: c: dual boot (Win98se & W2K4) d: junk e: empty f: W2K4 g: Win98se I have a complete backup of the system but my concerns of transfering everything to a different HD are these: 1. will the dual boot function still work if I simply restore 'c:' to a different HD? (I had a problem with dual boot before [think I had to reinstall OS] am gun shy now) 2. will W2K 'see' it is installed to a new HD and fail? (it would still go to 'F:' partition but a new HD - I'm removing the old HD) Any (constructive) comments appreciated. Any other 'obstacles' to look for doing this proceedure? TIA, Vic
  • 2. Terminal Server Sessions hangs 20-30 seconds
We updraged to 5 new Terminal Servers that are also Citrix servers. Since the upgrade users are experiencing an issue where their session will lock up for about 20 to 30 seconds then release. The major difference btn the old and the servers are the new servers are running RAID 5 with a Perc 4 integrated card. Anyone know a way to stop the pause? Thank You.
  • 3. PPTP server connection

  • 4. synchronization of offline folders
Hi all, Our network has several XP Pro workstations with SP2 installed and connected to a W2k server with SP 4 (DC also serves as our file server). We have our home drives configured for offline files. The problem is, the folder will go offline after every 15mins or so, and we are forced to right click and synchronize with the network. This happens when we are connected directly to the network drop or using wireless network. Would someone tell me what causes it to happen and how to fix it. I've read an article saying something that XP sp2 fixes that problem. We applied that on all our workstations and it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Thanks, Jeff
  • 5. Software Firewall (2003)
I suppose this is the right group for Windows 2003 questions.... I have a question about the usage of software firewalls. Is it becoming common practice for organizations to use the Windows 2003 software firewall on their servers? With XP SP 2, Microsoft is basically making a statement about network security with workstations. I would be willing to bet that most if not all installations of Windows 2003 have the firewalls turned off, citing the usage of a PIX or other hardware firewall for their gateways. I recently had an internal attack froma laptop running XP non SP2. The laptop attacked my router and took down all sites (main router was attacked) until the laptop was powered off. This eye-opening experience was enough to make me step up the XP SP2 rollout to workstations but I keep thinking, why not the servers too? It is a lot of work to configure the server firewalls but it is more work rebuilding after an incident. I would like to hear from people/admins who use the 2003 firewalls on their servers. MIKE

Deleting corrupted files with special characters in their file names

Postby Chris W » Wed, 23 Jun 2004 00:02:35 GMT

I after a SD card was inadvertently removed from the UPB reader, several
files were corrupted and now will not delete. The error message I get
when trying to delete them is
"Can not delete file.. Can not read from the source file or disk."

when I go to the command prompt and try to do a del . or a del *.* I get
this error

"system can not find the file specified
the filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect."

I had a similar problem before and found a solution on google but for
some reason I am not having much luck doing that today.

that looks similar to what I did before but it's not woking here. I
can't type in or copy and past a file name because there are mostly
spaces and just a few other odd characters. The only way I have found
to give me the real name of the file is using cygwin to list the folder
contents and this is what I get. . .

$ ls
ls: t: No such file or directory
ls: N: No such file or directory
ls: + vk
: No such file or directory
ls: Descript.ion: No such file or directory
ls: : No such file or directory
ls: s: No such file or directory
ls: i: No such file or directory
ls: d: No such file or directory
ls: o: No such file or directory
ls: (R: No such file or directory
ls: @+?.: No such file or directory

when I do an rm * I get this. . .

rm: cannot remove ` ': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove ` \241;@\356%+\001.': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `(\aR': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `+\240\240\240vk\n': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `Descript.ion': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `N': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `d': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `i': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `o': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `s': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `t': No such file or directory

3.Special characters in file names?

Hello,

I was trasnferring files from a MAC server this weekend and had to correct
tons of file names including ones that appeared as though they had boxes in
the file names, ones ending with spaces, ones with special symbols. I
renamed them all because the copy process would fail on them. Is there a
way to allow for any of these in case I don't have time in the future to
modify them on the mac server?

Thanks
