  • 1. Windows OS Hard disk confusion
Hi there. this is a good one! I have a windows 2000 server on 1 hard disk with 2 partitons and attached another physical hard disk as a slave with windows XP professional also with 2 partitions on it. the intention was to ghost an XP image onto the server. Once the disk was attached and detected a reboot was required. When rebooted I logged as normal yet within my computer C related the c drive of the slave disk with XP and E to the server. In effect the disks being back to front. removing the slave disk and rebooting Windows 2K tries to log me in but just keeps returning the intial login box. I can only login now once the hard disk is re-attched as a slave. I can't re-assign drive letters. tried different IDE configurations, no joy. I was told it could be a problem with the disks referring to incorrect pagefile.sys files. So I added a pagefile.sys to each partition in hope to rectify this. However I still have the same problem. Any ideas as this seems really bizarre. Many thanks guys
  • 2. Explorer does not list all drives.
Hi, I have 2 hard drives C and a partioned 1 into D/E. When I started my PC today it hung on start up with a msg saying, "Error connecting to hard drive. Press F1 to resume" which I did. Windows explorer now does not show drive D and E. They also do not show in Computer Management/Disk Management. Everything was working fine up until now. The only recent major change was adding an external drive recently. This problem did occur about 18mths ago and was fixed under warranty. My CD-ROM drives work ok. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
  • 3. Changed setup and ?raid failure
I have a hardware raid1 configuration (Adaptec), win2kPro, sp4. Running fine until I changed setup on bootup to add a supervisor and user password. Now Windows won't load. Could changing something in setup have changed the adaptec raid configuration to cause this? I of course went back and took out the passwords in setup, but Windows still won't load. Msg missing system.config...or something like that. Any advice greatly appreciated. Jack
  • 4. Modem seen as PCI Serial ort
After a year I decided to reformat and reinstall Win 2000 Pro. I am using an AMD 1000 on a Abit KT7A-Raid board without Raid engaged. Windows will not detect my USR hardware modem as such. Device Manager shows PCI Serial Port under other devices and can't locate a driver for said PCI. I downloaded the latest drivers from USR but no help. Any Suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

NTFS Partitions suddenly unreadable and transformed into RAW-Partitions?

Postby Joerg Battermann » Thu, 23 Dec 2004 07:33:26 GMT

Hello everybody,

I saw today that all of a sudden I am no longer able to read to of my
partitions because windows 2000 (sp4) says, the partitions are
unreadable and asks whether it shall format them. They used to be ntfs
partitions and all this happend from out of nowhere. I got the vendor's
(wdc) diagnostic tools.. ran them for hours on the hdd - and they say
it's fine - but how do I get my partitions/data back?! what can i do?

the corresponding eventlog entries are:

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please
run the chkdsk utility on the volume F:.

Any ideas?

Best regards & thanks,

3.single NTFS partition vs multiple NTFS partitions?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 w/Cardbus USB 2.0 card running XP Pro SP2.
I just bought an external USB HD enclosure (tray based) and have a
single WDC 250GB drive in it.

If I try to format it as a single NTFS partition with various
manufacturers packages it says it succeeds however XP sees it as an
unformatted disk (RAW). When XP asks to format it, it says it can't.

If I partition / format it as a ~1GB partition (FAT or NFTS) and ~249GB
partition (NTFS) it succeeds and XP has no problems seeing the two NTFS
volumes.

It seems that any combination (125GB/125GB, 50GB/200GB, etc.) works as
long as it's multiple partitions.

How can I format it as a single NTFS partition and get XP to recognize
it? Is this a partition map problem?

Thanks,
Dick

4.NTFS partition unreadable by Win XP installer

Hello all,

I have a desktop computer running windows xp professional and fedora
core 2 - configured as a dual boot machine with grub as the boot loader
sitting on the MBR. (/dev/hda)

I had power problems and once my windows xp professional computer was
put off without shutting down. After this, my computer just refuses to
boot. I can see the windows xp splash screen at start up and then the
computer reboots and starts from BIOS again! I tried safe mode, safe
mode - command prompt, last good known configuration - but all of them
have the same behavior.

I tried booting from the installation CD to repair the installation.
But C: shows up as an "Unknown" partition! But I am able to mount the
ntfs partition fine in linux and even open documents and copy stuff
around. (Linux NTFS module configured for read-only access).

Why is it that the win xp installer does not recognise the NTFS
partition while its easile accessible from linux. Is this something to
do with the boot loader? Please let me know. Also, any ideas about how
best to recover from this situation would be great.

Regards,
Srinivas
