  • 1. Belkin Wireless Problem Win2000
I have a Belkin Wireless USB Network Adapter (F5D6050) which links 2 computers each with Windows 2000 pro. The link had been working fine until one of the computers decided to try and download the service pack 4 for Windows 2000. The download was aborted halfway through but part of the pack has settled in to the machine and now everytime we try to connect, it just wont work. When I try to configure the computer that has the aborted service pack 4 download on it, it wont let me change the ISP address as it says it is already assigned to an SMC EZ Connect Wireless USB Adapter (SMC2662W). This is news to me as no other adapter has ever been installed on that machine. When looking through the programs or doing a search, I cannot find anything to do with this SMC adaptor. Also it doesn't show up under System/Device Manager, although the Belkin does. Hope that wasn't too confusing, but hope someone may be able to shed some light on this for me? Nikwak

  • 4. Error Message on Windows 2000 Event Log
Windows System Event Log is showing the following Another machine has sent a name release message to this machine probably because a duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the node that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state. I have done nbtstat -n and am getting ADMINISTRATOR Conflict.. The machine is regularly losing its network connection.. Does anyone know what I have to do to stop this.. Any help is grately appreciated.
  • 5. Hub/Switch problem
I am not sure if I am in the right group for this, but I can't find a Linksys or generic networking group. I have been trying to run 2 of my Protocol Analyzers (Observer and NetMon) and was unable to see Lan traffic, except Broadcasts and packets only to the PC the analyzer was on. This left me with 2 answers to this problem. Either I was on a switch (which I wasn't - I had the systems I was working on connect to a Linksys Hub), or the NIC card didn't have Promiscuous Mode ( or it wasn't on). After much switching of cards and checking with intel - they promptly told me that all their cards had Promiscuous Mode and were always on (which was why I couldn't see it in the properties page). This was driving me crazy. I had another linksys Hub (one was an Etherfast workgroup hub and the other was an Everywhere Hub that I just bought). Same result. They were acting like switches. I then got an old 10BaseT Hub I used to use from my garage (about 5 years old) and low and behold - it works fine. What is going on here? The main difference between a hub and a switch is that on a hub all traffic is seen by all ports and on a switch packets will only be seen by the port it is destined for (unless it is a higher end switch with Port Spanning). Anybody know? Thanks, Tom.

Help needed with NTFS and Share permissions on shared folders in W2K3 AD

Postby murras68@hotmail.com » Thu, 08 Jun 2006 05:57:54 GMT

I have 2 groups in Active Directory. One which will contain users who
need to be granted Read Only access to files within a shared folder.

The other group which will need to be granted permissions to modify and
update file in the same shared folder.

I do not want users in any of the groups to delete the shared folders
that contain the files.

I'm tearing my hair out over this so any help / suggestions will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

M

2.Home Folder server NTFS permissions and share permissions?!

Hi all,

I am setting up a new file server to store the users home folders, and have
the following structure.

Server -> users$ -> home folder of user

I used to have a Microsoft document or KB stating what ntfs and share
permissions I needed to set on the user$ folder for everything to work such
as offline files etc, I have tried searching for it, can anyone help?

Also currently we have an issue with our existing home folder server in that
we as admins cannot get into the folders unless we take ownership... I have
seen there seems to be to ways around this, set the user$ folder to have an
explicit administrator full control permission, which gets inherited, or by
using a GPO? recommendations?

3.TS2000 NTFS permissions on W2K3 share

Absolutely baffling problem; TS2000 is a DC in a Windows 2003 domain. 3
shares on the W2K3 server are available for local and TS users. Local users
and TS2000 users have identical NTFS permissions (all users are domain users).
When logged in as TS2000 user OR the domain Admin I cannot save to most
folders - get access denied or folder is marked read-only. Get this: On the
SAME NTFS W2K3 volume on another share that is different from the source
share I can save data by TS2000 users. Also, I have another member server in
the domain and TS2000 users have no NTFS problems whatsoever.

All current SP's/CU's. I am stumped!

Any advise really appreciated cause I'm ready to jump off the bridge!

4.Default NTFS/Share permissions on W2K3

Hi

Installed new W2K3 file and print server.
Created a share at root level on NTFS drive D:

Shared permissions had everyone - full control, and assigned specific group
security permissions.

user logs in from workstation and can access the share, but cannot save
changes......access denied....

I noticed that if i click on the folder share properties "Read only" is
ticked.....if i take it off and go back in to check, it comes on again.....

What is happening, what is the new defaults, and what is the best way to
create a share.

5.NTFS Permissions on Folder Redirection Shared Folder

Hi everyone,

I have inherited an AD from a previous employee and am trying to fix some
issues.

The problem is this, Folder Redirection is configured and setup on a certain
OU in a 2003 AD. The GP is set to grant the user exclusive rights to My
Docs. Someone has gone and changed the NTFS permissions on the folder that
houses the redirected documents, to allow domain admins access to the users
folders. This has caused some users folder redirection to stop working.

My question is this, how can I reset the NTFS permisisons on the area to be
as they should (i know the way they should be), in a correct mannor. Is this
possible?

Will I have to remove the policy and add another one redirecting to another
area on the nwtwork?

Any help is appreciated..

Thanks,
Gary
