Printer driver for HP LaserJet 4200??

Postby UGV0ZXJHVg » Thu, 12 May 2005 04:44:04 GMT

I've been running on a 64-bit Server 2003 (as my desktop OS -- I happened to
have it, not XP) since my return from WinHEC. Dual Opteron 250s... I can say
that it absolutely ROCKS. Incredibly fast, perfectly stable.

As can be expected, there are a significant number of "gottchas" in terms of
finding 64-bit drivers for everything one needs, however.

MOST importantly, I can't see to find the drivers for the HP Laser Jet 4200
series of printers ANYwhere. They're listed on the AMD site as "in box", and
the Laser Jet 4200 is on the Windows hardware compatibility list for 64-bit
Windows.

Perhaps I'm stooopid, but I can't find these drivers. Can anybody help me
out please.

It's nice to run on 64-bit Windows. It'd be nicer if I could run on 64-bit
Windows AND print...

Contact the hardware or software vendor to determine if printers and other
devices have 64-bit drivers.

Have you ever TRIED to "contact" HP and ask if they have a 64-bit driver for
one of their printers? I have. It doesn't work out too well.

It's not like their "talk to somebody online" software works on 64-bit
systems, and once you DO get to talk at somebody, they have absolutely no
clue what you're asking about.

If it was just a matter of downloading the driver from HP, or searching for
the INF on the CD, I'm thinkin' a would have done that.

Thank you.

I tried that before I posted my question to the news group. LJ4100 driver:
Doesn't work. Neither do several others that are numerically "close" in
terms of model number.

I've even grep'ed the .inf directory, and the instal disks (both for XP X64
and S03 SP1), for the VID/DID combo and did not find it. Now, it could be
that the .INF file is compressed on the install disk (so grep wouldn't find
it), but I don't see any INF file that resembles the name of the 32-bit
install file.

PeterGV < XXXX@XXXXX.COM > did some thinking and came up
with these words:

Actually - yes. I contacted them both on my printer and my scanner and
received a prompt reply both times. 1st reply gave a temporary workaround
to get the printer working and the second telling me that they were in the
process of creating the drivers for the scanner and would send an email to
notify me when they were available. Great support IMHO.

I think their support sucks, to put it quite plainly.

There is no listing, no mention at all, of drivers for Windows x64 on any of
their proudct "download the drivers" pages. Sure, they have "Windows 64-bit
Edition"... sorry, those are drivers for the Itanic.

While the dude I finally talked to was pleasant, he was also clueless.
After, oh, 30 minutes "researching" the problem, he told me that there WERE
no 64-bit drivers for the LJ4200, but there were for the LJ4250, and I should
try those. Good idea, says I.

He points me to the download.

I download.

Guess what? 64-bit drivers, alright. For the IA64.

I said it somewhere else, but I am at an absolute loss in trying to
understand how the OEMs/IHVs can be so far behind the curve on X64 support.
It's not like they haven't had over two years to prepare. And it's not like
porting a driver to X64 is a big deal... and we're talking PRINTER drivers
here, most of which don't even have kernel mode components.

with these words:

Potato - potatoe
Let's say conservatively that HP has 100 models of computers. How many are
going to be on x64 machines? Which drivers do you commit the resources and
expenses for? Do you rush right out and provide drivers for every model you
have or do you wait and see what demand you have? They are a business and
investors demand a return on their money as do all the rest. Glad you want
drivers for your printer - jump on the bleeding edge and gain some
patience - it cuts a lot less that way. :-)
New technology - untested on world market so far - mistakes are going to
happen. Since you have this problem well in hand - start writing drivers
and selling your work - no big deal since they are only PRINTER drivers.
Again - which printers do you invest in for this new and upcoming
technology? Write a bunch of drivers for older machines or put your
emphasis on newer machines with drivers for the new technology? Not as easy
a decision as you might be thinking.

I believe from what I've heard from manufacturers I've contacted that
they do not expect X64 to be very popular and some just said they had
NO plans to create drivers for it.

IF the OS does sell well the manufacturers will all fall in line with
drivers but it's a "wait and see" right now.

It really can't hurt anything if we keep in touch with hardware
manufacturers and keep asking.

Thanks, Charlie. With your assurances that the 4100 driver would work, I
spent some more time on this, and I finally DID get it to work.

It seems that I was missing the key bit of wisdom of "How to install a local
printer driver for a remote printer" (KB 282842).

So, it turns out that I *was* stooopid after all! I plead ignorance due to
lack of inutitive interface (I didn't expect that I'd need to ask to add a
LOCAL printer when I was connecting to a REMOTE printer).

I appreciate the help.

Whew, it can be painful to be stooopid! I'm going back to the world of
device drivers and file systems now -- I'll leave this systems administration
stuff to you guys who know what you're doing.

Great, glad you got it working! The problem is that your remote print server
doesn't know anything about x64 Windows, so won't have a driver available for
you. So you need to locally add the driver. And no, probably not intuitive.

I have never seen an HP LaserJet that couldn't use the LaserJet 4 series
drivers. I would try something comparable from a previous generation
LaserJet.

It's not HP, it's just about all of the OEMs. The reason why everybody's
tech support sucks is that they sit in a room filled with a couple hundred
other call center employees, all of them being paid $10/hour (or less if you
happen to get the guys in Bangladesh) to read from a scripted series of
flowcharts. If it's not in the flowchart, it doesn't exist.

If you're really lucky, then when you call you'll get someone pretty sharp
who is just out of high school and aspires to actually do something in IT
when they grow up, and they'll be able to think outside of the flowchart
enough to help you, unless there's nothing that they can do (in the case of
new drivers).

I find it is very easy to use HP printer in WinXP 64 bits. I just connect 2
computers with file and printer sharing. On first computer using WinXP and
you HP4200 laserjet. Then Sharing that printer. On the other computer with
WinXP 64 bits, just add and browse that printer. On Additional driver,
install a similar HP printer with default WinXP 64 bits printer driver. I
find this way works for all HP printer and future windows without any error.
If you use direct other HP driver, many error.
