  • 3. What happened just before OEMPowerOff was called?
Hi All, When my power button driver received the button action, it tried to put system into suspend mode via SetSystemPowerState. But the system crashed as the error messages showed below. Although it said "Calling OEMPowerOff...", I think OEMPowerOff was not entered at all. Because I just implemented a stub function for OEMPowerOff, turning off a LED. LED was still on and system crashed. Any ideas about this? 1.running Microsoft Device Emulator from "Device Emulator Manager"

I used PB 5.0 to build an emulator using Microsoft Device Emulator, then I
built the SDK. Now I am trying to run it from "Device Emulator Manager" in

can click are sub items in the category "Pocket PC 2003" for example, but I
cannot right click on it to connect. Please help, thanks

2.getting canned for finding security breaches

Dear Colleagues:

At the tail end of this post is my original post with regards to this
matter. Basically, I went and told my superiors that our network was
seriously exposed.

Today I had a meeting and, guess what, it was suggested that I find another
job. This is great, essentially having the dipshits at work side with a
completely ignorant person who knows nothing about security.

Guess what industry I work in? Education!

Thats right folks, education. Maybe the people who are in education need a
bit of it themselves.

And we wonder why our system is so screwed up!

Curious George

Dear Colleagues:

For the life of me I don't know why I have to ask this question since the
answer is so obvious, however, I need to have others tell me that I am not
completely insane.

I work at a place where we have a myriad of wireless access points and NO, I
am not writing from there at present.

NONE of the wireless access points has any form of security on them
whatsoever. No WEP, no CHAP. . . no nothing. Everything is open so you
could walk into our joint, grab an IP address and surf the web to your
heart's content.

Here is the problem. My boss insists that its "no big deal" and that since
the servers are on the inside and protected, we really don't have a thing to
worry about. Furthermore, my boss is under the impression that since we are
situated in a wide area, that nobody would be able to get into our network
because of this distance. Needless to say, my boss does not consider
somebody sneaking into a parking lot with a laptop, a good network card and
a directional bazooka antenna a possibility.

So here is what I have to explain to my boss' boss and, perhaps, the board
of directors. . . and here is where I can't help but laugh. I hope that I
will be able to keep a straight face come Monday when I have to explain
myself to people why its important.

Okay, so I know the analogies. For example, I understand that not having a
secure wireless network with many Waps and high gain transmission antennas
is the same as putting cables out to anybody within 'x' amount of yards with
a sign that says "free internet access", but since I am going to be asked
these obvious questions, just what type of damage could somebody do?

Yeah, I know about denial of service attacks, yeah I also know about
enumeration and password guessing, but considering that we have an SQL
server on the inside of our network (no, the sa account password is not
null) what are we talking about.

I can envision so many things. Like somebody just sitting there caputring
packets to get things like usernames, passwords and the like, but come on. .
. what else could they do.

I have read my boss the riot act many times, but this is now going to go in
front of somebody over my boss' head, so, aside from giving them worst case
scenarios, end of the world analogies, etc., how else could people break in.

Creative responses are appreciated and will be rewarded with much praise.

I can't believe that I have to actually explain this to people, and this
entire thing would last about two seconds when it comes to talking with a
computer professional, but you see, my boss is under the impression that
they are a computer professional because they received a Master's degree in
Comp Sci back in the 80's. I know that this line of thinking is dangerous,
but I really want some creative answers to put my point across strongly, and
yet professionally.

Although I realize that this post will likely be the butt of many jokes
(which I will appreciate immensely) I never the less would appreciate a bit
of useful information in your responses.

I am going to have a serious drink now, and then bang my head against the

Thanks in advance,

3.Corrupted Device Emulator Manager etc

My VS2005 is corrupted after install/uninstall of SDK (I'm not sure, it is
the reason).
All popup menus are empty in TargetDevice Connectivity Options.
When I press on any Settings button Unhandled exception window appears:

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an
sender, EventArgs e)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.OnClick(EventArgs e)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnMouseUp(MouseEventArgs mevent)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WmMouseUp(Message& m, MouseButtons
button, Int32 clicks)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProc(Message& m)
   at System.Windows.Forms.ButtonBase.WndProc(Message& m)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Button.WndProc(Message& m)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.OnMessage(Message& m)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m)
   at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg,
IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

Device Emulator Manager opens empty window (without list of emulators).

I already twice reinstall both VS2005 and PlatformBuilder (including SPs).
Can anybody give a hint, what is going wrong on my PC?
LocalSettings contents, COreCon problems, etc?

4.MVS 2005 ERROR -Can't run Device Emulator Manager

I have problems with visual Studio 2005 and I don't know how to fix

Starting from beginning:
I've installed all software from Windows Embedded CE6.0 180 - day
evaluation kit (inc. CE 6.0 R2)
- Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition
- Windows Embedded CE 6.0
- MicrosoftVisual Studio2005 Team Suite Service Pack 1
- WindowsEmbedded CE 6.0 Platform Builder Service Pack 1
- WindowsEmbedded CE 6.0 R2

When I try to load a new project I get this error:
he following error has occurred during XML parsing:File: I:
Line: 141
Column: 5
Error Message: Schwerwiegender Fehler

The file 'I:\........vcproj' has failed to load.

I cannot build any pocket or smart phone project. This error
rror retrieving information from user datastore

I can only start and build C++ win32 project
But when I start debugging (F5), I have this error: isual Studio has
encountered an unexpected error

And when I try to start the device emulator Manager on MVS 2005
The device Emulator manager doesn load and I get this error:
he Smart Device Configuration Package ({D245F354-3F45-4516-
B1E6-04608DA126CC}) did not load because of previous errors. For
assistance, contact the package vendor. To attempt to load this
package again, type 'devenv /resetskippkgs' at the command prompt.
This scenario is the same for all projects store on my computer.
Ie tried to search on internet. And I find that I'm not the first
user who has such problems - but I couldn't find a real solution.
Somebody suggest removing everything and installing again - I did this
and it didn't help - I have still such errors.
Probably there are still some entries in registry or some files -
which cause such errors - but I don't know what should I remove?
Could someone please help me to solve this problem? Have someone
ever had such problems? How can I fix it? Are there special tools from
Microsoft which fix such problems?
Thanks in advance

5.Control manager on emulator

When I launch control manager from eVB and select the Pocket PC 2002
emulator as device, I get the message "failed to find suitable control
manager for your device".
I have tried uninstalling and installing eVB to no avail.
This wouldn't overly worry me, except that my app uses a FileSystem control,
and the first thing that happens when I run it on the emulator is I get a
message telling me it could not create the filesystem control (and bombs out
of the app).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
