Offline files problem - some files lost from View Offline File

  • 1. easy ACL editor
I have a need to manage permissions to hundreds of files and folders. There is different NTFS permissions on every file so inheritance is out of the question. I would like a software tool that would allow me to input a users name and get a list of all the files and/or folders that they have permissions to and then be able to edit the ACLs of those files/folders. I called MS support and they said they don't make a tool but some 3rd party might. I can't find one that works. I found plenty that simply REPORT the permissions but none that edit them. Can anyone help me?
  • 2. files inaccessible
I have a hard drive that is outisde my computer. When I add folders to this drive and move them or the files around, all of the files become inaccessible. How do I fix this? I have several folders that are empty that I can't access and then I have several files that I can no longer access after I moved them from one folder in the directory to another. I am running WinXPSP2
  • 3. FAT and FAT32 partitions not accessible
A friend of mine has a computer with Win2000 installed. Recently she told me that she could not read the floppies (and memory pen) anymore. Changing hardware did not help as well. The PC has a ViaTech chipset, and I noticed that the problem was extended to all kind of FAT and FAT32 partitions: of the three hard disk paritions, two were NTFS, and were perfectly accessible, one was FAT32, and trying to read it gave the error message "the partition is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". Same error with floppy and memory pen. As soon as I converted the hd FAT32 partiton to NTFS, the HD partiton was perfectly readable. Obviously I cannot convert FAT partition of floppy or memory pen. I tried to reinstall the VIAtech chipset driver, but the situation didn't change. Excluding viruses and/or trojan (because the PC is very well protected, anyway I checked and didn't find any malicious program running), I suppose something like a program that modifies system libraries and/or registry has been installed. Few hopes that uninstalling almost everything the problem will disappear. Does anybody know which is the problem and if there is a remedy without reinstalling Win2K? Thanks a lot Roberto
  • 4. Checkdisk
I have a problem when I run checkdisk in windows, it stops on the fourth stage and it locks up completely. When I run a defragmentiation afterwards I get the famous "blue screen" but the computer does not crash down completely. If I restart it works again. So do anyone know how to fix this problem, is there a program which isolate bad/damaged sectors? It is so frustrating not to be able to clean up my harddrive. Roar Tjorhom - Norway

Ok.. what did I do? or did something do it to me? Whenever I startup my Windows XP Home Edition with all the updates, I cannot open a folder or a drive without the "work offline" box popping up first. Then I have to click on OK to get the folder or drive to open. What gives? IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!

Dear Tom,

Thanks for your response and for trying to send me csccmd. I don't know
why the forums made up that address for me. My actual address
is XXXX@XXXXX.COM , and I'd love to
get a copy of csccmd 1.1.

I've tried backing up the CSC directory, but I can't - I get 'Access
Denied' on many of the files. They show up green in Windows
Explorer, so I guess they're EFS encrypted, but why I can't decrypt
them when I presume it encrypted them with my username and password,
I don't know.

Thanks,

David.

Ah... the cache is encrypted in SYSTEM context in XP.

If you run with backup / restore privilage you should be able to make a copy
a least. Try ROBOCOPY - I'm pretty sure it has such an option.

Dear Tom,

Excellent. That allowed me to extract many of the files, so I do
feel a lot happier. I've also turned off encryption on the offline
files, which went through and decrypted many of them.

This process seems to have confirmed that some of the files are still
there but no longer in the offline files database, as there are quite
a few files which are still encrypted. I've tried robocopy (nifty
tool!) but it won't copy the encrypted ones either (even with the /B option).

I've also done a
bit of research on EFS and discovered efsinfo, which tells me that
the encrypted files are only recoverable by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
Neither my local or my network administrator account can decrypt the
files.

Can you think of any way to decrypt the remaining files?

If not, what you've already done has been very helpful.

Thanks,

David.

You can start a CMD in SYSTEM context by using the AT command / task
scheduler to schedule a "CMD /K" task to run in SYSTEM context.

Also, a local/domain admin ought to be able to recover those files via the
machine's EFS recovery key. I'm not an EFS expert, but look in the EFS
documentation (MSDN/TECHNET/KB) and look for recovery agent.

Hope this helps.

1.Offline files problem - some files lost from View Offline Files

Does anyone know how to find files which were being worked on offline but
have now vanished from the View Offline Files folder.

Today a blue screen of death wiped out access to the most vital
directory of my offline files. I suspect that the files are still
there, but the View Offline Files folder no longer shows them. It is
now 2.7GB and contains c. 8000 files, whereas the \Windows\CSC
directory is 3GB and contains c. 10000 files. Of course the missing files
are the ones I've been working on all week.

I'm guessing that some database which converts all the cryptic names in
the CSC directory listing to meaningful file names has become corrupted.

Is there any way of rebuilding that database, or of extracting the files from
CSC with meaningful names and directory structures?

Why can I not copy the contents of the CSC folder? (I get 'Access is Denied')

Is there any way of working out what files in the SCS directory correspond
to which files on my server?

Any ideas on how to get my files back would be most gratefully received.

Thanks,

David Wanless.
P.S. I am seeking a copy of the csccmd utility, v. 1.1, as it seems possible
that it's /extract function might be able to rescue the files.

3.offline files - file types that cannot be made available offline

when synchronizing data between a PC and a laptop, I
always get errors that some files cannot be made available
offline "Files of this type cannot be made available
offline".

Is there anyway to make the program treat all files the
same and copy them regardless? I am not worried about data
integrity as these are only testing files.

4.Offline files sync'd to offline files

I am running Server 2003 at the office and XP Pro on the laptop.

I have been synchronizing the laptop and server using Offline Files.
No problem.

Now I've introduced a home PC running XP Pro.

How do I get setup so as to keep the same synch'd files on the
server,
laptop
and
the home PC??

I've tried to setup the PC to use Offline Files and synch with the
laptop. But the files on the laptop are also offline files. I haven't
figured out how to synch one set of offline files with another set of
offline files. It doesn't seem possible.

Any help please?
