Windows Server 2003 runs with only one processor (on some dual-processor or multiple-processor servers)
by Windows Server 2003 » Thu, 07 Apr 2005 14:13:04 GMT
If you install Windows Server 2003 on some dual-processor or
multiple-processor servers, the server may run with only one processor. This
may occur if the server uses some Pentium Pro or Pentium II processors.
The issue affects the following processors: . x86 Family 6 Model 1 Stepping
X GenuineIntel (where X = 1, 2, 6, 7, or 9)
. x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping X GenuineIntel (where X = 3 or 4)

However, I have a "Family 6, Model 5 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~332 Mhz"
processor and the problem still exists. I have loaded Windows Server 2000
which runs both processors.
Would anyone be so kind as to help me get both processors running?
Thanks,
Jason

It would seem that the only solution is to use different processors.

Why is my processor effected though?

That's a good question...
It may be that they didn't realize the full scope of the problem in the
original document, and it extends to your processor also.

1.Windows 2003/2003 R2 server - multiple processors
HI,
I am trying to remember the difference in Windows 2003 and 2003 R2 when it
comes to when you can user Standard or Enterprise Ed.
If I have 2 processors installed can I use either version for 2003 R2 ?
Thanks
2.Process(Total)/Processor time not matching Processor/Processor Time
Hi
I have a problem understanding the process and processor performance
counters in Windows Server 2003.
I am monitoring a process SP.exe on a 2 processor machine and here is
what I see:
Process (SP)/% Processor Time = 145
Process (All)/% Processor Time = 175 (30 of this is the 'Idle'
process, so I don't care about it)
Thread (Total)/%Processor Time = 175
But,
Processor 0/ % Processor Time = 85
Processor 1/ % Processor Time = 85
Processor/ % Processor Time = 85
And 85 + 85 is way above 145
Morever, when I look in 'Task Manager' , I see SP.exe is shown to be
taking 85% CPU!
Shouldn't CPU times on both processors add up to 145, since that is
the total non-idle time used up by all the processes? And so,
shouldn't Processor/% Processor time be 145/2=72.5?
What contributes to the remaining CPU time?
I am confused.
Thanks!

3.Windows Server 2003 and Multiple Processors
Hi,
Does the Windows Server 2003 standard support multiple processors out of the
box? We plan to use a couple as a web server / database server couple with
2-4 processors each.
Thanks,
Glenn.
4.Running Windows 2003 Server on Intel P4 Hyper Threaded Processor
Ok Microsoft and Intel agree Hyper Threading should be disabled when Win2K
Pro and Server. The question is whether Server 2003 like its XP Pro brother
is blessed with the ability to utlitlize Hyper Threading?
IF "Yes" THEN "What about SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition running on the
said Win2k3 Server"
IF "No" Why the hell not?
5.Processor utilization on Multi Processor Servers
Hi All
I've noticed that processes which would normally fully utilizes processors
like winzip or winrar etc. only utilizes the capacity of one (1) CPU in a
Multi Processor environment via Terminal Services.
If you log on to the console of a Terminal Services server, the process will
use all CPU's to almost 100% utilization. But through a terminal services
session it seems to be limited to use only one CPU.
Is this by design or is there a workaround / configuration to all a single
process to use more CPU power if available in terminal services?
Kind Regards
