  • 5. Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
Last night I was going about my regular buisness of (after work) getting on and vegging in fron of my laptop while I watch TV. An update came around (mind you everything was working fine yesterday) which was: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB980182). Now for some reason I can't access yahoo.com or lotro.com? These two sites are the only ones that I can't seem to access for some reason? I have tried to search for malicious spyware and viruses nothing comes across (McAfee, and Malewarebytes) I have tried to System restore to a date I know nothing was wrong and did the updates along with updateing my McAfee again still didn't work? And then I tried going online to see if anyone else had the same problems found some sites but said to change MTU settings in my router and computer? Didn't have to do that before why now? So if someone can get back to me I would appreciate it thanks!

Hi

If you have Steganos Internet Anonym installed, uninstall it (not
just disable it) and see if that helps.

All of a sudden, (after installing the Microsoft Spyware but I'm not sure if
this causes the problem) my Windows Update doesn't work any more. It allows
me to go to the Express Install/Custom Install selection page, but whichever
option I choose, it goes to a page saying "Windows Update has encountered an
error and cannot display the requested page." with errort No. 0x80010108

I have uninstalled AntiSpyware but the same problem remains. I reported to
the Online Assisted Support but nobody got back to me as promised...

What can I do now?

Michael

Hi Michael,

A very common cause for that error number is Steganos Internet Anonym. If
you have that application installed, uninstall it (seems disabling it
doesn't work, the program must be uninstalled) and see if that resolves the
problem.

here seems to be several threads on this error code for failed Updates.
Rather than start a new one, I'd like to post my update log, as I've tried
all the suggested fixes in this and other threads (sfc /purgecache and
/scannow; registering the DLLs; uninstalling and reinstalling SP4 and SP4
rollup), and I'm still getting the 0x80010108. I am running Win2K on a
laptop, with Mcafee a/v installed, on a Comcast cable modem. Coincidentally,
the last successful updates were installed on Sept 19, and the cable modem
was installed on Sept 22. I'm able to connect to the Internet, obviously, but
it appears some services can't start, and I'm not sure if that's the problem.
I also searched "failed to evaluate installed rule" but didn't find anything
helpful. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Please check the settings in the registry against these :

There are instructions for creating a .reg file from the above here:

NOTE: There are 3 settings that are not intended for Win2K as mentioned
in that post. The above registry settings do *not* include them.

ALSO, stopping the AU service via the Service console (services.msc),
deleting the contents of the WINNT\Software Distribution folder, and the
restarting the AU service has resolved the GetUserToken failure for some.

re: MowGreen reply

Thanks. I did finally get a reply from Microsoft tech support. They
determined I didn't have Client for Microsoft Networks installed, and after
installing and rebooting, the updates installed. However, I will check my
registry against your suggestions, just to be sure.

Thanks for your help,

Nige,

Search on 0x800A01AE, and see Monte's post of 8/24/2004. He suggests running

wuapi.dll
wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll

It worked for him, and it just worked for me.
