  • 2. Windows Vista media player min:sec problem
Hi - I FOUND the post button working <g>...! Here is the deal: I have Vista home premium media player 11. I am trying to copy my old audio cassettes to my pc and then burn them to cds. Some are compliation cassettes from lp's or other cassette, some were purchased "albums". I have figured most of it out - <g> but after the files are created into wave files, and i try to burn a cd with multiple files from multiple cassettes (as they are stored on my pc in very large files), there is an error button - a red X - on most of the song files in the list of files to be burned. Media player will not burn or copy any of these files with the red x's on them. The details say something about media player does not know how long the files are and cannot determine if the files will fit on a cd. So they cannot be burned. Where do I get help on this and how do i tell media player how large (usually in min:sec) the files are so i can get on with this project? I just want to take the wave files saved and burn them on to a cd so i can delete them from my pc and play them in my car. Thanks so much! Debbie -- Debbie
  • 3. Sync podcasts to blackberry curve using WMP 11
I just got started on a laptop with Windows Vista Business (hp pavilion dv2500t, re-imaged with Vista Business). When I connected my blackberry curve 8300 the Sync Center detected it and informed me that I could sync to the blackberry (with 2GB microSD card) through WMP. So I went to WMP and set up an auto playlist (genre:podcasts) and set it up for sync-ing with blackberry. The sync works, but I have a problem with the folder structure it created on the BB. It looks like it put /Music/Artist/Album/<file> whereas it would be much better to have it as /Music/Album/<file>. Is there a way to let WMP know that the sync should set this folder structure? I tried unchecking the "create folder structure" in the sync options and when I do that, all the files get dumped into root of the SD card which is of course not optimal. Secondly, I was hoping that if I delete a file on the BB, that it would delete it on my hard drive too. But all it does is skip it for sync-ing the next time. Is there a way to force a delete from the device to the WMP library/hard drive? Thanks in advance!

Not thumbnails but... thin vertical lines? (Halp!)

Postby jugularity » Thu, 06 Nov 2008 13:38:18 GMT

-"I having a problem with thumbnails not showing up... The thumbnails
are just thin stripes as oppose[d] to actual, you know, thumbnail
images."-

That's the only reference I have managed to dig up so far in the wide
world of the Web (from 'this page'
( http://www.**--****.com/ )).
The reply from the technical expert read, in part:

-"Man... The problem youe having sounds very strange.."-

It appears I'm facing a problem that is so unusual, I could be a
candidate for Ripley's Believe It or Not, if only Ripley's feature was
still around. Maybe it is.

It's not that all of my image files refuse to show up as thumbnails.
But a good too many appear as thin vertical lines, in their folders.
(Yet they open up functionally in the usual applications). Ahhh, Vista,
Vista, Vista.

So now you're getting the picture as to why I am reaching out to you,
maybe a bit too embarrassingly. (How fast we can sink while desperate.
It's not pretty.) If you know what the heck is going on here, perhaps
you'd be kind enough to give a feller a helping hand.

Mercy. I mean, merci.

it failed to do the trick. I'm much obliged for you to have taken the

My next guess would be that your
video driver may need an update.

As a test...you could try reducing
your Graphics Hardware Acceleration
and if an improvement is realized...
you definitely need to update your
video driver.

"No guarantees and proceed at your own risk."

Windows Vista -
How To Reduce Graphics
Hardware Acceleration

1. Click Start, type personalization
in the Start Search box, and then
click Personalization in the Programs
list.

2. Click Display Settings.

3. Click Advanced Settings.

4. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and
then drag the Hardware Acceleration
slider to the left until it is one notch to
the right of None (the Basic acceleration
setting).

5. Click OK, and then click Close.

6. If you are prompted to restart the
computer, click Yes.

If the problem is improved...reinstall/
update your video driver. If the problem
is not improved...return the acceleration
to Full and seek a different solution.

Good luck.

Thank you again for generously helping. And I'm impressed you managed to
dig up such a solution; you really know your way around these nuts and
bolts.

I also appreciated your impeccably spelled out directions.

A "Change Settings" button appeared in the "Troubleshoot" tab, but it
was grayed out. A message followed: "Your current display driver does
not allow changes to be made to hardware acceleration settings."

So that's what running into a brick wall feels like.

Grazi once more, John.

Hi jugularity,

I have seen this type of error with image files (.jpg), that have been
transferred from an XP system.

It normally does not affect all files just a small proportion
. and is caused by the horizontal and vertical resolution
becoming confused. normally opening the files will show them normally.
If you load and save them with an application that displayes them
correctly that will normally cure the problem.

To check if this is the cause I use Irfanview to open an affected file
and on the info screen it shows the DPI on a normal file this will show
as 100(%) X 100(%) I have seen figures in affected files of 11000 in the
vertical field.

'IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers
worldwide' ( http://www.**--****.com/ )

Hope this helps

This is a definite indication that you need
to update your video driver.

Go to the support website of your video
adapter's mfg. and search for Vista
compatible drivers.

If you don't know the make and model of
your video adapter...check the documentation
that came with the computer.

Also you could try these steps...
Go to...Start / Run...type...
msinfo32 ...press enter.

On the System Information screen...choose...
Components / Display...

You should find the make and model of your
display adapter as well as the driver version.

If the driver on the support website is more
current than the one you are running...
download it and install it. Also you should find
and follow the installation instructions at the
support site.

Once the driver is updated...return your acceleration
to Full.

Hey all,

I've been having this problem too. It doesn't affect a great number of
my pictures, but it's just enough to be annoying. I suspect it has much
to do with what barman has said, since I've transferred all of my
current pictures from an XP laptop, and it never had any problems
opening them. They open fine, but the preview will be an extremely thin
version of the picture.

In Infranview, the DPI for most of the pictures, whilst not 11000,
isn't 100x100. Instead, it's 72 horizontally, with no number in the
vertical field.

First, try to update your VGA driver.

If that doesn't help:

Do you get the same lines when you try the 'DirectDraw' test in DxDiag?
(Start->Run->DxDiag). If so, does it help to disable hardware acceleration?

When this doesn't help, try MediaPlayer->Extra->Options->Performance->
Advanced. Remove mark for 'use overlay'.
