  • 2. Vista Dialup Networking
When I Power up my Gateway PC with Vista, It insists on dialing up my internet connection. I only have acess to dialup, no DSL or Cable in my area and I only have 1 phone line. If I set Never dial a connection, I can't connect to my ISP, & if I set Always dial up my default connection, It dials out every time I power up. Also, Sleep does not work on this PC. After a few hours, It won't wake up & I have to power it down & restart. This is really getting irritating. Does anyone have a solution. Thanks
  • 3. Having Problems Getting My Computer to Connect to the Router.
Hello everyone. Recently I just upgraded my old Windows XP to a Vista. I have 3 computers in all: 2 laptops (both run XP) and 1 desktop (Vista). My ISP is cox Cable ad I use the Motorola Surfboard Modem and a Belkin Router. Back when I had the windows XP desktop, I could connect all 3 computers to the internet via the modem and router. But now I'm having trouble trying to get the vista to connect to the internet. The internet works perfectly whenever I connect the modem and the computer directly, but whenever I Connect the modem to the router to the computer to try to get all 3 comps running the internet, the desktop says it has limited or no connectivity to the network, but the 2 laptops can connect just fine. Ive tried calling both Cox and Belkin, but they were unable to correct the problem so I decided maybe you all could perhaps provide a solution of sorts or maybe you have had the same problem as me. Sorry for the Lengthy post and the bad punctuation/grammar, but if anyone could provide some sort of solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ryan
  • 4. Wireless networking problems... Help please!
Ok, I've set up a wireless network. i've followed everything exactly. The only problem is that when I'm using the wireless, anything I download, stops and times out, anything I play on Youtube only loads partially and will not go any further. When I plug the modem directly into my laptop, it does everything normally, Finishes all downloads and all. Anyone know what could be doing this?

Frustrated and No Help - Cannot ping netbios name or localhost

Postby VG8gT2xkIFRvIC4gLiAu » Fri, 18 May 2007 12:54:00 GMT

OK.
8 hours later and $69 down the drain and no answers.
Cannot ping netbios name or localhost.

No tools like netdiag for Vista.

All Services are running. Winsock and tcp/ip have been repaired. Permissions
have been checked. I have compared this computer with another and all the
services are running. Were do I go from here. Very frustrated. 4 days and
still no answers.
I can ping the internet, but not a friendly name. @#$%^& Vista. Microsoft
was no help and they wrote this. I am a Network Administrator and have done
this for years. I have many hours of training and certs.
So what am I and everyone missing here. I am getting to old for this probably.

I can ping 4.2.2.2 with no problem. I just can't ping any friendly name. i.e.
yahoo.com localhost, or the computers NetBios Name, etc. I do a repair, Vista
says it is ok? But, I don't have the internet. A Red X appears and it tells
me that I have local access only.

Thanks for replying

I've been having similar problems. I've found a number of partial cures. I
don't know whether I've finally managed to fix the problem permanently. Try
this:

1. Programs that install context menus can interfere with networking. Why?
I don't know. I used a program called ShellExView (free download), which
gave an easy interface for disabling context menu additions. I disabled
most everything that wasn't a Microsoft program. This helped, but wasn't a
full cure.

2. I had tried Sphinx firewall. It appeared to interfere with wireless
networking. I removed it. However, either it didn't uninstall entirely or
it was partially recovered when I did a restore. I discovered this when
Security Center gave a "don't run two firewalls at once" warning. I
re-installed Sphinx, then uninstalled it, removed all traces from the
registry with RegSupremePro and manually deleted its directory from
Programs.

3. I deleted all residual files of programs I've uninstalled from Programs.

4. I used RegSupremePro to remove all registry entries for uninstalled
programs.

5. I examined Processes carefully and made sure nothing was running that
shouldn't be.

6. I disabled IPv6 on the network adapter that was giving me the problem (a
wireless adapter).

7. I edited RegEdit to disable the Broadcast flag (Microsoft has
directions).

Since I did all of this, I find that I'm not having "local access only"
internet issues (right now, I've only access to networks via the wireless
adapter -- I don't know whether the wired adapters were effected). I also
find that my internet access is much, much faster. Hopefully, I've fixed
whatever was troubling Vista (probably a combination of factors).

I have an OEM installation of Vista Business, so I couldn't call Microsoft
support. Sony support ran me through endless cycles of flushing the DNS
cache, re-installing the adapter, and all sorts of other obvious stuff, none
of which worked. A lot of what I tried above (and that, unlike Sony's
suggestions, appeared to work) were culled from several hours of internet
searching. Apparently, this Vista problem is relatively common.

Good luck.

ell, with microsoft support, we did a repair install, etc and no help.

net config server

server name \\MYPC
server is active on
it show the correct adapter interface
server hidden no

net config worksatation

computer name \\MYPC
Full computer name MYPC
workstation active on
show the correct adapter interface
workstation domain workgroup
logon domain MYPC

nbtstat -n

MYPC unique registered
workgroup group registered

so with this I should be able to ping MYPC or localhost

till have the problem and I am looking for some ideas.

Still cannot ping localhost. I know it has to be a Vista DNS Client problem,
but not sure how to fix it.

2.cannot ping using netbios name

hey

I have 2 computers in my home network, one computer with winXPpro (sp2) and
another with win2k3.

I haven't configured lmhosts because I thought that is for network with many
computers, so having lmhosts is an overkill... am I wrong, then please
correct me...

WINS is not installed on the win2k3 computer

win2k3 computer is configured as domain controller, I've run dcpromo.exe.
This wizard created a DNS which don't have any Reverse Lookup Zone....

The computers can ping each other using IP address, but they cannot ping
using netbios name.. what am I missing here?

Jeff

3.pdc cannot ping netbios domain name

hey

I've got a simple network at home, consistig of a winXPpro (sp2) and Windows
Server 2003 Enterprise (180-days evaluation)

I've just performed a fresh installation of win2k3 and promoted this
computer as domain controller.

When I promoted this machine to domain controller I choose the standard
values the wizard suggested.....

Each computer can ping each other using their netbios name

the problem is that on the win2k3 machine I cannot ping the domain using
it's netbios name...
(It doesn't work from the winXP machine either)

firewall is turned off on both machines

any suggestions why pdc cannot ping domain name using netbios name

4.Cannot ping localhost or own IP.

I'm having trouble getting my Linux box running properly. It is
Mandrake 9.1 distro. Here's the deal

- I cannot ping myself, either with localhost, 127.0.0.1, or the
machine's IP address. It doesn't time out or give me any response at
all, just hangs until I give it ^C
- I can ping another workstation on my subnet, as well as hit our web
server.
- I cannot ping the linux box from another station on the same subnet.
- I've made sure my /etc/hosts file is correct. And it works, as I
can ping the workstations by the name I defined. Just not myself.
- I made sure in the mandrake firewall that
'accept_broadcasted_icmp_echo' and 'accept_icmp_echo' were both set to
yes.

I'm going to need this for tftp and dhcp services, so I need to get
whatever is blocking the access turned off. Any help or advice will
be greatly appreciated.

5.cannot ping localhost, but can ping 127.0.01

Simply try to remove your network card from the device manager and
reboot.... windows will reinstalling and reconfigure tcp and driver setting
!
