  • 4. Vista file sharing
I am trying to set up a Windows 98 / Vista network for a neighbor. She has an old desktop running Windows 98 and a new HP laptop running Vista home (premium I think) networked together through a linksys router. Both computers can talk to the internet. Each computer can ping the other. The Vista computer can transfer files to and from the Win 98 computer. The Win 98 computer can see the public folders on the Vista computer but locks up solid if I try to access them. I have shared some folders on the Vista computer and they are marked as shared, but when I click "show all the folders I have shared", nothing shows up. If Vista can't figure out what is shared how am I supposed to? I have looked for advice on quite a few tech sites and everything I have found either doesn't apply, doesn't work at all or makes matters worse. She also has an old parallel port ink jet printer on the Win 98 desktop that she would like to share, but from what I see on the 'net Vista needs it's own drivers and there is probably about 0% chance of that. Any help would be appreciated. Roy

Users Folder Shared After Creating First Share

Postby RGVsbCBCb3k » Thu, 15 Feb 2007 19:58:32 GMT

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate with latest updates on a large home
network. I've just created my first share on this Vista machine and have put
it in the Public folder. For some reason the Users folder (C:\Users) is also
shared - can anyone tell me if I have done this by mistake or whether the
Users folder is automatically shared?

In the Network and Sharing Center, Network Discovery, File Sharing, Printer
Sharing and Password Protected Sharing are all turned on and the remaining
settings are turned off.

Anything you share under the \Users\ directory structure causes that folder
hierarchy to appear. However, you should see that none of the files are
shared unless you share the directory that contains them. Also, the Public
Folders can be shared as a block from Network & Sharing Center.

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft newsgroup!

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: you noticed Vista shared
your user folder automatically. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me
know.

Thanks to Michael for his key in.

Just like Michael said, sharing a folder under your profile folder will let
all the parent folders appear. This behavior is by design.

The following file mentioned this behavior as well:
Sharing a Folder or Printer in Windows Vista
 http://www.**--****.com/ #ECHAC

I understand your feelings on this behavior. By my test, others can access
folders under the profile folder. Though they won't see any file there, it
doesn't make people feel secure. If you have concern on this behavior,
please feel free to submit your suggestion on our product to the following
link. Our Product Group reviews the suggestions submitted by our customers.
Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the

Thank you both for your replies which answer my question.

My network machines are set up with the same accounts on each machine. I've
noticed that when I access the shared Users folder on the Vista machine and
I've logged on to an XP Pro machine on the network as (for example) Malcolm,
I can only see the sub-folders (within the Vista Users folder) for Malcolm
and Default. However, I appear to have full access to these folders which
does give me cause for concern and which could be confusing for home users. I
will therefore use the feedback link Sean has provided.

Thanks again.

Obviously xcopying files and permissions is easy enough to accomplish.

My challenge is to modify Small Business Server 2003 in a way that new users

I added a BUNCH of network users, all of them went off without a hitch
and then suddenly out of NOWHERE the add user wizard told me it could
not create the shared user folder for the user. (But it can still
create the user).

C:\Shared Users Folder is still shared as "Users", permissions are set
according to the KB article I read on the subject. However
\\server\Users prompts me for a login (logged in as admin on the
server). Is this part of the problem?

5.vista sharing all of Users when only sub-folder is shared

i have two vista business machines, laptop and desktop.

both members of the same workgroup. network discovery, file sharing, and
password protected file sharing enabled. i log into both systems with the
same login and password (local accounts on each system).

starting with nothing shared on the laptop (confirmed via looking at
'computer management->shared folders')

i right click 'music' folder on laptop, select 'share', and leave default
values (my username, 'owner' permission level, and hit 'share' button.

on my desktop, i go to network, find the laptop, and see that 'Users' is now
shared, not 'Music'. because Users is shared, i can get to -all- files
under that folder on my laptop, from my desktop. wtf?

why is vista not just sharing 'Music'?
