1.HP 4200N networked printer goes offline
HP4200N networked in school lab. Printer will go offline at one of the
computers, making it offline to all. I can't tell which one. We end up
shutting down all computers until the printer comes back online. It seems to
happen mostly when we try to add/change paper on the printer.
Computers all running XP Pro SP2. Printer has dedicated network connection
and is shared through the W2K server, running SP4.
All computers using the PCL5e printer drivers (per recommendation from HP).
Computers are also running Fortres 101 security software.
Is there any way to stop the printer going offline, or to easily tell which
computer has made it go offline? Needless to say it causes quite a problem
when the lab is full and everyone has to print something!
Thanks!

2.HP Laserjet 5000N goes offline after wireless network installed
We have an HP LaserJet 5000N attached to a cat5 cable on a p2p LAN. We
have two PCs connected to the LAN both by cat5 cables. One is a
workstation and the other is a laptop. Both are HP and 5 years old
running Windows 2000.
The router is part of the cable modem that came with the Comcast
broadband service. This setup has been working perfectly for several
years.
A week ago, I hired a tech from a local computer support company to
install a wireless network. He brought a Buffalo Air Station Wireless
G Router and Access Point. That installation seemed go well.
My laptop, a 5 year old HP Omnibook 6000, does not have wireless built
in so the tech brought a Netgear 108Mbps Wirepess PC card. That
installation seemed to go smoothly as well and I was able to access
the internet from anywhere in the house.
I don;t think this is relevant, but we also have a Canon S830D ink jet
photo printer. It had been attached to the workstation via a USB
cable. I bought a D-Link wireless USB print server (DPR-1260). The
tech installed that as well and I was able to print from the laptop.
Shortly after the tech left, we started having problems with the 5000N
printer. As far as I know, it was not touched. It is still attached to
the LAN via cat5 cable. We can both print to it just as before, but if
it goes into PowerSave, it won't wake up like it used to. If I turn it
off and back on again, it wakes up and prints just fine until it goes
into PowerSave again.
I can't see how that could be related to the wireless network
installation, but it started happening right after that. I have a call
into the tech, but have not heard back yet.
Can it be related?
Any other explanation?
I suppsoe I can disable PowerSave -- at least for now.
Thanks for any hints or suggestions.

3.HP 4200N printer goes offline
We have an HP 4200N printer directly connected to our network and shared from
our Win2K Server. Each workstation (running WinXP Pro -- 40 at this time)
prints through a Standard TCP/IP port to the server. Somehow one of the
workstations will put the print service offline, then no one can print. The
printer stays offline until whatever computer decides it's time to go back
online.
This problem doesn't happen all the time, but say I open the drawer to add
paper when someone happens to be sending a print job, that workstation puts
the printer offline. The last time this happened I went around a rebooted all
the workstations in the lab, but that didn't release the printer - we also
have classroom computers connected and it may have been one of them.
Rebooting the server is not an option since it also runs our databases for
math and reading programs, and I don't think it would do any good anyway, the
server didn't put it offline.
I think this is a Windows print service thing, but don't know how to get
around it. Thanks again for any help you can give.

4.Vista Basic - network printer goes offline on re-start
I bought a laptop for my daughter about two weeks ago with Windows Vista
Home edition. It is working fine generally.
I set this up on our home (Netgear wireless router) network I gave the
laptop a ame and changed the Windows Workgroup to the same as the other
two computers on our home network, set up the WEP key and it connected
okay, can access the Internet and can see and be seen on our home network.
One of the other two computers (still running Windows ME) has an Epson 760
printer attached, and I have never had any problems connecting to this or
printing on it - from my other laptop (running Windows XP).
In order to add a connection to a network printer (the Epson 760 mentioned
above) on to the Vista laptop, I have found that it is not possible to add
this directly as a network printer (gives an error message). However (after
consulting an on-line forum) I have found that it is possible to add it as a
local printer, and then direct Vista to use the network port for the printer
on the other computer (e.g. using format of \\network-name\device-name ).
Well this works okay initially. The printer is added shows on-line - and
I can print to it over our network.
However here is the problem. If I turn the Vista laptop off, when I start
it again later the network printer appears off-line, even though the Vista
laptop is still properly connected to the network (can see and be seen, and
can access the Internet). All attempts to turn the printer back on-line fail
(either directly or as administrator using UAC) showing an error.
I have checked various on-line forums (including this one) and many people
using Vista computers seem to be suffering this problem on a range of
different printers.
I have tried various things
1. I updated my Windows ME PC to use NTLM2 but this doesn seem to have
any effect.
2. I also responded to a Microsoft web page article that someone referred me
to (934455 - A "Web Services on Devices"-based printer appears as Offline
after you wake a Windows Vista-based computer from sleep). Microsoft sent me
a hotfix patch which I have installed, but this has not had any effect in
helping resolve this problem.
The only (rather crazy) olutionthat I (and clearly others) have found to
work is to delete the printer and immediately re-install it whereupon it
starts working again immediately. This can be right there must be a
better way.
Perhaps someone has some other suggestions? (or maybe Microsoft could just
fix this?)
