When the window opens after you've clicked on Control panel, you should have on the left side of the window a list of choices. Under the heading Control panel click 'Switch to Category View' this should change it back. Hope this helps :)

I have recently removed/uninstalled programs from my computer through the Control Panel and selectingoption to change/remove. Even after rebooting the computer some of these programs area still listed in the Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs, when I click on the program to attempt to remove it again it states that either the file name and/or program is not there. How do I remove it from the Add/Remove Programs listing?
Hi Lauren, To remove orphaned entries from the Add/Remove applet in Control Panel, try this: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). 2. Locate the following key in the registry: 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall 4. Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file. 5. Look for the name of the program with the orphaned entry. 6. Delete the entire listing for the software with the orphaned entry. 7. Close the registry editor. 8. Restart your computer. -- Regards, Ramesh XXXX@XXXXX.COM I have recently removed/uninstalled programs from my computer through the Control Panel and selectingoption to change/remove. I have got 1 software which i can't remove in add/remove software. I used the software uninstall function to uninstall it but it still appears in the currently installed programs list. Is there any other way to remove it?
The program may have been uninstalled, only the Add/Remove entry is not removed. You may either clear the invalid entries manually by editing the registry (or) download iolo technology's System Mechanic (www.iolo.com). It is a nice utility using which you can clear the invalid Add/Remove entries. To remove the invalid/orphaned entries from the Add/Remove applet manually [Windows 2000/XP] 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). 2. Locate the following key in the registry: 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall 4. I am tryign to change the desktop background but everytime I go into my control panel and choose the option to choose desktop background the box that comes up so that I can chnage it simply flashes on then flashes back off within second or does not come up at all. What can I do?
Could someone please tell me the name of the control panel file ( that executes the control panel) as I would like to add it to a toolbar... Thanks
It's not a file. In earlier versions of Windows, you could create custom shortcuts such as you suggest - see, for example, my page on how to add this and many others in Win9x: http://www.**--****.com/ But this doesn't work in Windows XP. The technology is different. Control Panel used to be an actual folder. Now it's merely display code that fakes a folder to display a certain list of items. Here's something you *can* do, though - search for all of the Control Panel files - they all have .CPL endings - and make shortcuts to every one of them. Put these shortcuts in a new folder, and add *that* folder to the toolbar. In fact, if you make a separate toolbar of the folder and add it to an edge that already has a toolbar, then shove the other toolbar to its maximum size so that only the "Control Panel" label and the >> chevrons appear (this is much easier to do than to say - sorry if it's obscure!!). You'll end up with a single-click cascading menu listing each of your individual Control Panel items. -- Jim Eshelman, MS-MVP Windows http://www.**--****.com/ AumHa Forums: http://www.**--****.com/ The Parasite Fight: http://www.**--****.com/ Computer Health: http://www.**--****.com/ Troubleshooting: http://www.**--****.com/
1.How to hide Control Panel, or tools in Control Panel
Hi, My home Windows XP (Professional edition) computer has several accounts I set up for each individual family member. Is there a way that I can customize to hide Control Panel (or tools in Control Panel) in my children accounts? I need to prevent them to get to Control Panel to change my settings. I know I can have gpedit.msc to set it up, but it looks like this setup applies to all accounts. I just want this setup applies to my children accounts only. I am an administrator. Thanks in advance. 4.Control panel link in start menu does not open control panel
When you click on the "Control Panel" lnk on start menu, I see an hour glass for about 3 seconds and then nothing comes up. I have reviewed the registry and do not see "nocontrolpanel" marked as a (1). I can go to RUN and type in "Control" and the Control Panel comes up with our error. It appears the link in start menu is not pointing to the Control exe file, however unable to locate where this is done. -- Bill Rowland
