Hi all:
My XPE image correctly PNPs a USB flash drive when I connect one, but the
devices always show up as non-removable (no "Eject" context menu in explorer,
no entry in "safely remove...", no removable designation in disk managment
mmc.)
I've got all of the following components in my image. Anything obvious
missing?
Disk drive (all three)

I must be missing some obvious concept. I have an existing configuration A.slx and want to add all available software componentst to it. So, I added the XPe Tools macro component, and tried to add components using XPProEmulation component. It added nothing to the A.slx component, but added a few to a new component it created: XPProEmulation.slx. I guessed that I'm supposed to activate that configuration, so I did. It does contain the components from A.slx, and a few more. Now, I add more components using XPProEmulation and, again, it does not add anything to the active configuration XPProEmulation.slx, and pressing save in XPProEmulation doesn't change anything. I assume it tried to add to XPProEmulation.slx, but because it was active, something failed. So, I tried changing XPProEmulation to save to B.slx, and yes, B.slx no has a few more components. I'm missing some thing very obvious. How do I add every software component to a configuration? Do I start with a new configuration, add XPProEmulation, then add my hardware macro component? -- Regards. Mark K Vallevand - 2. Can I put rundll32 netshell.dll HrRenameConnection in TD?
Hello I am using netsh to set a static IP address as discussed in this forum and MSDN. Everything works fine but I am using Minlogon so I have to use rundll32 netshell.dll HrRenameConnection to name the interface. Can I set this in TD using RunOnce or something similar? This is probably cause your computer see your USB as a fixed drive. Go see in Disk Management if your USB is set as fixed.

Yes, it does appear as a fixed drive. Is there some way to change that?
The same drive appears to XP Pro systems as removable.

Fritz, I have the same problem. My build sees USB flash drives as a "local disk" rather than a "removable disk". I think we're ruining drives because of this. I have removable storage service in my build. I'm not sure how to resolve this? John

We also had the same problem. It appears that the issue has to do with a specific version of the usb driver, usbstor.sys. The answer is to remove the "USB Boot Mass Storage Device" component from Target Designer and rebuild (you will also have to remove any components that depend on this component). I should point out that after we rebuilt with the component removed, we copied the new usbstor.sys driver file over to the system32 folder on our target machine that was having the problem. The problem was fixed, so this verifies that the usbstor.sys was definitely causing the problem. usbstor.sys version 5.1.2600.2996 does not work, version 5.1.2600.2180 works. I seem to have a problem with removable USB storage devices which include a removable 'pendrive', my Zip 100 Drive and a generic flash card reader. Although the USB mass storage device loads properly, in device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark in the disk drive section, with the errant device listed with a code 10 error which still remains after rebooting. 2.USB Drive seen as removable drive instead of local drive
Hi, I have two usb memory keys from two vendors. The first one is seen as a local drive, so I am able to backup it doing an image with DriveImage or other products. The second one is seen as a removable drive. And I am not able to do image backup, but only file backup. Do you know a way to force the system (WinXP Home) to recognize the second drive as a local drive ? (Do not tell me to choose a key from the first vendor.) Or do you know a way (I have already tested powerquest driveimage and acronis trueimage, so I need either a way to force them to recognize the disk, or a name of another software that support image backup while the system is running and allow compression, password protection, and browsing of the image) to do a image backup. 3.Vista does not recognize any removable USB drive
Hi, I have a new computer with Vista Home. When I plug in the removable drive, Vista asks for driver and disk (no disk came with them as they were not required in XP). The manufactirer does not offer any new drivers. These are pretty simple devices. I have: 1 512 Mb Memorex original travel drive 1 1Gb Kensington Data Traveler 1 Fuji FinePix A101 digital camera I have no problems with those with my two other Xp computers. Help anyone? Thanks!

Hi,
I am using Windows XP with the latest SP and patches and since some time ago
I notice that every time that I plug my removable USB Drive (a flash memory
of 256 MB) Windows XP assigns it a new letter; that is, it started with "E:"
and then "F:", "G:" and so on. It seems that for some reason it does not
reuse released letters from past sessions and yesterday it reached "Z:" and
since then the USB memory is not mapped to a letter and it is not
accessible.
I have noticed too that although Windows Explorer does not show the letters
of past sessions, some programs such some FTP clients show all the letters
("E: removable drive",..."Z:Removable drive" as if they were actually used.
I would like to know if this is a known issue and how to force the release
of used letters which indeed are no longer used. I have searched Google for
a reasonable time to no avail and most of the questions are about forcing
the mapping to a specific letter always (to keep scripts working), which is
a different issue.
