  • 4. Upgraded workstation from W2k to XP shares fail
The upgrade took place with XP SP1 unfortunatly it was attached to the server and after 2 failed attempts to install SP2 I realized that SP2 had to be applied before the machine received any security updates or it would install, but the OS would not work properly. (after SP2 installed, clicking run would create a shortcut, clicking IE would create a shortcut nothing would run) The moral here is always use an OS with the latest SP, if not at least disconnect from the network! After finally installing and getting all working, the upgraded machine would not allow any access to shared folders. Spent 2 hours trying to track this down. I renamed the machine, connected and disconnect to the network. I even removed it from the 2003 server and reconnected. I even recreated the shares in XP. Shares could be seen, but access was denied, to any user (including administrator) on any machine. Printer shares were available. Thoughts?
  • 5. Dual Boot - Win98/WinXPpro - Win98SE won't recognise DVD ROM drive
I want to dual boot Win98SE with XPpro, and to do this I have to install Win98SE first. I have a new machine with an ASUS P5B motherboard (Dual DDR, S-ATA II, etc) and a clean HD which I have partitioned (4) and formatted to FAT32. Trouble is, Win98SE (and earlier OS's) won't recognise the fitted JMicron JMB 363 PATA/SATA PCI Express IDE controller, and tells me there is no CD-ROM drive fitted. The manufacturer's web site does not list any drivers for OS's prior to WinXP. Does anyone know of a suitable driver - or a work-around??

Postby CHARLES » Thu, 23 Oct 2003 04:28:46 GMT

My system does not recognize my dvd+rw,dvd, or cdrw
drives ( 3 of them). They were working fine Friday and
now I have the yellow exclamation point on all three.
The do not show up in the My computer section. The only
thing that is different is a installed a Pinnacle PCTV
pro pci card friday. The are still attached to the built
in controller with power connections. Things just keep
getting better and better. Hope someone can help. Thank
you

Andy,

Thanks, but it didn't work. I deleted the E: and G: drives as instructed
and rebooted. However, the G: drive came back.

2.DVD-RW Drive Shows up as DVD-RW and CD-Drive in Windows Explorer

I have a weird situation going on with my DVD-RW drive. I have a Sony
DRU-710A DVD-RW drive installed on my machine with no other optical drives
installed. For the last couple of weeks, the drive has been showing up twice
in Windows Explorer with two different drive letters. It shows up as drive
as a DVD-RW (Drive E:) and as a CD-ROM (Drive G:).

I have made sure that I am running the latest firmware version of the drive
and I have not made any changes to the system or installed any new software.
Sony's support could not provide any useful information.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this issue? I am running
Windows XP Home with SP2 installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

3.DVD RW Drive not recognized as recordable let alone a DVD drive

Sony DVD RW DW-U14A drive, plugged in, Windos has
recognized it as merely a CD ROM drive and will not see
it as the drive it is. The help on the M$ site did not
help (changing the registry did nothing) and it wont read
CD ROMs.

any help?

5.blank cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, and dvd-rw unrecognizable in drive

All of a sudden my pc won't recognize a blank cd or dvd, yet it will
recognize a software cd or any that I've already recorded on. Light will
blink as if it's trying to read it, then quits. My pc actually read a blank
cd today and let me burn photos on it, first time in a month, put another cd
in, and nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled cd drive, I've done
everything listed on Troubleshooting Reading CD discs. I recovered my pc, but
not to factory condition, just to point of uninstalling all
non-factory-installed software programs. I've also tried different brands and
speeds of the cds with no luck. Any suggestions?
