Hello all. I have turned off System Restore, but it is still taking up 3.17GB of hard drive (D:). Can I simply delete all the files on the restore drive, and use the drive for my own, other purposes? I do not intend to use restore again. Thank you.

I upgraded to WinXP from Win98. Now I cannot hear any sounds played on my computer. What should I do to fix the problem?
  • 3. Can't find HAL.DLL at bootup
I get the error message telling me to reload a copy of HAL.DLL to the hard drive in order for XP to continue to boot. The problem is the hard drive isn't accessable because the missing file is the one that allows access to the hard drive. The drive is listed in the BIOS , recovery cd's do not work, Norton Utilities recovery routines do not work... Where do I go from here?

I'm trying to copy some animated gif's onto my hard drive from a site. However right clicking and saving picture as.. will only allow me to save as a bmp file, which consequently won't be animated when in use in presentations. I have tried to save as a gif using dropdown menu on the save screen which works on Windows 2000, but the option is not available in XP... Any ideas?

Need help with file sharing - home network (wireless)

Postby Michael T » Tue, 11 Oct 2005 04:36:02 GMT

Can I use Windows XP's file sharing feature to share files/printers when my
desktop is wired to a wireless router - and my notebook (or laptop) has a
wireless connection to the home network. (The desktop does not have a
wireless card.)

I can connect to the Internet just fine, but after running Network Setup
Wizard on both computers (using a Dell Memory Key) I cannot see either
computer's shared folders.

Yes. Wired and wireless are completely compatible.

What connection option did you specify to the Wizard? If it detects
the router's shared Internet connection, tell it to use that
connection. Otherwise, tell it that the computers connect to the
Internet through a residential gateway.

Make sure that all firewall programs are configured to allow full
access by computers on the local area network.

Thanks Steve. You nailed it.

I discovered that the Norton Internet Security (that is installed on my new
Dell notebook) was blocking my WinXP Home Network from sharing files.
Fortunately once you click on the application's Personal Firewall link
(Norton Internet Security) you can easily use the WIZARD button (on the
'Networking' tab) to enable file sharing.

2.Help Needed Re Setting Folder "Access Permissions" For File Sharing on Home Wireless Network

I am running an 802.11b wireless network between a desktop PC
connected by cable to a Microsoft wireless access point (which is
connected to a broadband modem) and a laptop with a Microsoft wireless
PC card. Both PCs are running Windows XP Home.

After setup, both successfully share the broadband access and a
printer and My Network Places shows both PCs and the folders and files
on each that have been designated for sharing. From the laptop I can
access the desktop, can access and share files on it, and can transfer
files and data between the two.

However, from the desktop I can't access any of the shared folders or
files on the laptop although they are displayed and listed in My
Network Places. When I try to access a folder or file I get the
Windows Explorer error message:
"\\ [name of laptop\folder] is not
accessible. You might might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to
process this command."
I have plenty of space on each, 10GB on the desktop and 45GB on the
laptop. What "access permissions" and which "server"?

Any explanations and suggestions? TIA

4.Need expert help with file sharing curiosity on home network

My computer: Win XP Pro wired into D-link DI-624 wireless router. Simple file
sharing enabled.
Son's computer: Win XP Home networked wirelessly

Generally, no problems. There is one annoying problem that I haven't been able
to figure out, though.

He shares his "My Music" folder.
Some of the files in this folder share no problem. Others will not (access
denied, etc.).
If I boot my son's PC into Safe Mode and disable simple file sharing, I can
manually change the permissions of the files that will not share to match the
permissions of the files that will share, and then the problem is solved. When
new files are added to the shared folder, so will share automatically, whereas
others will not and need to have their permissions changed manually as described
above.

Likewise, some files in the folders I share with him exhibit the same problem,
whereas others share no problem. Again, if I disable simple file sharing on my
XP Pro machine and manually change the permission, this solves the problem for
that particular file.

My question is, with simple file sharing enabled, why do all the files in a
shared folder not automatically acquire the same permissions?

Any help greatly appreciated.
