  • 1. lost xp desktop icons
i have windows xp, sp 2 with all the latest security updates. for about a month now when i log in, the screeen only shows the background and no icons. this problem occurs on 1 our 3 startups. any ideas. my desktop is set to 'show icons' i also see that there is a hot fix for this problem id 948277. does it work. i am leery to try as this is not yet a hard problem. i can get task manager up with the blank screen but it shows only 46 or my 62 processes running. explorer.exe is not running with the blank screen up. is this problem related to a recent XP security update. i am thinking the problem may be related to a security update problem.
  • 2. Standard VGA driver disabled = no monitor
Hello: I was trying to install a new video driver for our org's computer and in the process I disabled the standard vga driver through the control panel. Now my computer will boot just fine, XP logo screen shows up then goes black. I get the nice sounds that a boot was successful, but have no video at all - just charcoal colored screen. I tried booting in safe mode, but it hangs after '...installing mup.sys... or something like that. Can anyone help? (maybe if I could memorize the keystrokes to enable the driver that would work - lol) I'm desperate - we're a small non-profit and I've rendered our only computer useless!

I can activate Windows Desktop Search with: Set wshshell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") wshshell.findfiles How can I now command WDS to bring up the Search Companion (usually a simple mouse click)? or alternatively How can I bring up Search Companion directly without first activating WDS?? -- Gary''s Student - gsnu2007xx
  • 4. Desktop icons rearranging themselves
Folks, I was working this afternoon, and suddenly, for no apparent reason, the icons on my desktop began to align themselves as if I had them set to Auto Arrange (I don't). I use a little utility called WinTidy to store the layout of my icons, so I can easily restore them to their "proper" positions, but every time I reboot, or even Refresh from the right-click menu, they all go back to the left-hand side of the screen. Auto Arrange, as I mentioned before, is not checked; neither is Align to Grid. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Hello,
My default printer keeps changing from what i have selected to the first
printer listed. I have uninstalled all printers and reinstalled but that has
not resolved the issue. There is no group policy running nor is the printer
being selected via login script. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Joe

There is not necessarily anything you can do about this, some manufacturers
insist that their printer be the default.

1.Windows XP Pro keeps changing the Printer Port for network printer

We are running Windows 2000 server and 1 of 6 computers running Windows XP is
constantly changing the port address of a shared network printer. It is set
to connect to the \\servername\printername as opposed to connecting to the
Jetdirect port on the HP Jetdirect printserver. We have contacted HP and they
don't know the reason it is doing this. I believe it maybe a Windows problems

3.Default printer keeps changing on its own for every user

Hello I have a Windows server 2k3 xsystme that is running Temrinal services
and hosting about 15 users. My problem is that the Default pritner for
almost every user is changing constantly. I have the system configured to
auto create only the default printer and all pritner are installed as local
pritners on the server. For some reason, each users printer changes to
anothers and is causing alot of havoc on my network. All users are running
either Windows XP Pro or Win 2k Pro, and all users have roaming profiles
enabled. any help with solving this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in

4.Default Printer keeps changing

I have a laser printer connected directly to my XP Pro computer, not shared.
There is a shared inkjet on another workgroup computer that I have added to
my printers. The problem is that XP keeps defaulting to the shared inkjet
on the other computer. I set it to my laser printer, print some pages, but
after the job is done and I go on to something else, the default printer
changes back to the workgroup inkjet.

Anybody know why this keeps happening? Other than deleting the inkjet from
my printers, what can I do?

thank you,

jm

5.Problem with printer paper source keeps changing back to default settings

I installed a canon ip3500 on XP pro, In printing profiles I set up paper
source to "front for plain paper". Sometimes when I log off and log back on
later, it changes back to "rear tray". This is very annoying.
I also have 10 user accounts I need to create and I don't want to go through
this hassle of changing paper source for each account when it changes back
on its own.Can anyone tell me how I can either tweak the driver to change
the default paper source to front, or make a change in the registry? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
