WINDOWS XP Pro SP 3 cannot read CD or DVD-RW disks on DVD-RW drive

Postby RGF2ZSBB » Wed, 13 Aug 2008 09:08:08 GMT

The problem I have is nearly identical to what is captured in Windows
article 899527. but that was for WIN XP computers with SP 2 installed. Not
clear if this was fixed in SP3 or still applicable. Have two ATAPI DVD- RW
drives (TDK 440N and a Sony DRU-810A) properly installed as a master/slave
configuration. After loading my software CDs in either drive, WIndows fails
to read them. Light on the drive comes on for a moment but autorun file
fails to run. Looking at the drive on My Computer shows the dirive to be
empty. Clicking on the drive icon results in a message to insert a disk.
Same thing for DVDs previously writtenby these drives. Any suggestions?

Dave , try a different Ribbon Cable and/or IDE Connector on the
Motherboard.

2.DVD-RW Drive Shows up as DVD-RW and CD-Drive in Windows Explor

Andy,

Thanks, but it didn't work. I deleted the E: and G: drives as instructed
and rebooted. However, the G: drive came back.

3.DVD-RW Drive Shows up as DVD-RW and CD-Drive in Windows Explorer

I have a weird situation going on with my DVD-RW drive. I have a Sony
DRU-710A DVD-RW drive installed on my machine with no other optical drives
installed. For the last couple of weeks, the drive has been showing up twice
in Windows Explorer with two different drive letters. It shows up as drive
as a DVD-RW (Drive E:) and as a CD-ROM (Drive G:).

I have made sure that I am running the latest firmware version of the drive
and I have not made any changes to the system or installed any new software.
Sony's support could not provide any useful information.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this issue? I am running
Windows XP Home with SP2 installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

4.blank cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, and dvd-rw unrecognizable in drive

All of a sudden my pc won't recognize a blank cd or dvd, yet it will
recognize a software cd or any that I've already recorded on. Light will
blink as if it's trying to read it, then quits. My pc actually read a blank
cd today and let me burn photos on it, first time in a month, put another cd
in, and nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled cd drive, I've done
everything listed on Troubleshooting Reading CD discs. I recovered my pc, but
not to factory condition, just to point of uninstalling all
non-factory-installed software programs. I've also tried different brands and
speeds of the cds with no luck. Any suggestions?

5.CD-RW and DVD-RW drives appear as hard disk drives in 'My Computer'

After moving my system (XP1800+, A7M266, 9600XT, 1 Gb DDR, 2 x Seagate
HDD, Pioneer DVD-RW, LiteOn DVD-R) into a new case, I noticed that for
some reason my two optical drives are now listed as hard disk drives
under 'My Computer' in Windows XP Pro.

I've checked and reattached the cables, and tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the CD/DVD drives (both on the secondary IDE channel) -
this seemed to fix the problem but when I next rebooted the computer,
they were listed once again as hard disk drives.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.
