I'm starting to get sick and tired of how little attention Microsoft is giving to the huge host of people who are having problems with the svchost process. Quite frankly it's appalling! Like everyone else here svchost burns up my cpu power and won't stop until I delete the process, and that when it kills off all my sound drivers and sometimes my internet connection and I only get everything back by restarting and on some occasions having to reinstall the bloody drivers!
  • 2. Original "Administrator" Account lost
Hi. I've been using WindowsXP in the original "Administrator" account. By original account, I mean that I never created a new, named account with administrator privileges. I just used the Administrator account that came with the machine. I recently needed a 2nd user account. Before allowing me to set up that user account, XP said I needed to create at least one account with administrator privileges. So I did, and I jokingly named the new administrator account "HAL 2000." Well, it's not so funny now! I lost access to the original "Administrator" account. Now, when I log on, all I can access is HAL 2000. (The 2nd user account served its purpose and is gone and is not part of the problem.) EVERYTHING I've set up in XP is in the lost "Administrator" account! Does anybody know how I can get back to that original "Administrator" account?? Obviously, I need to move my documents and settings out of that "Administrator" account and into a new, named account with admin. privileges, but first I just need to access the original "Administrator" account. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!! Andy

I ran HiJack This, and with help deleted most of the list carefully, creating a system restore point first, of course. Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and AVAST are operating too, and may bring up Spybot S&D - but now, I have those pesky red Xs on websites. Additionally, I can no longer 'play' Cash Cab on Discovery.com b/c it won't come up (interactive) so I tried to download Adobe Flash Player, and it won't download. Security settings reverted to "Default," and Active X stuff changed according to Adobe's suggestions...all seems fine but ... After uninstalling NERO software no longer sees my DVD drives as DVD drives

Postby David Carmichael » Wed, 31 Dec 2003 11:52:14 GMT

Maybe somebody here can point me in the correct direction...

OK I had 'DEMO' version of Nero-6 installed and did not like it due to the
way that their media player took over my system and uninstalled the
software. [Did not install InCD]

When I did the uninstall all of a sudden I loss function of my built-in
Win-XP Drag-N-Drop to CD-R/RW media..

Also Windows Explorer only displays both of my DVD drives as CD drives.

Now my "{*filter*}link" 'PowerDVD//Director/Producer' software no longer sees my
DVD drives as DVD drives.. will not playback or write to the DVD+R/RW drive!

I have tried a number of "FIXES" from running a patch for MISSING CD-R/RW
drives to deleting "FILTERS" in the registry with no luck.

I have even tried to reinstall NERO-6 using a "OEM" copy that came with my
DVD+RW drive...

Yet I am for a loss..

Nero will burn DVD+ media from DVD files written to harddrive.
Ulead's DVD MovieFactory-2 seems to run just fine... as long as I start up
Nero first and make sure that the "BOOK TYPE" is not set to "DVD-ROM"... if
the 'BOOK TYPE' is set to "DVD-ROM" my set-top boxes do not see the finished
disc as a DVD-VIDEO disc...

This topic has been "talked about" [in the Microsoft Newsgroups] as
happening to a number of users when they uninstall some sort of
CD/DVD-/+R/RW burning software on their Windows XP systems.

Short of doing a reformat of my harddrive does anybody know of any fixes to
correctly identify my drives to all software?

With the large number of sources of information around.. maybe I am looking
at the wrong source 'and/or' using the wrong search phrases in 'Google'

I don't have any help for you, but I can add some information dealing with
problems I currently have with Archive Creator. Perhaps someone can give us
both a solution. I downloaded the demo version of Archive Creator then paid
for the registered version. I didn't realize until a few days later that AC
had disabled System Restore (didn't turn it off -- literally disabled it so
that nothing happens if I click on the system restore key). I uninstalled
AC, then everything (all text) except the arrows disappered from the Help
and Support page (XP-Home Edition). I was manually able to get to system
restore and go back a few days. Everything looked fine. Then I reinstalled
AC and the same thing happened!

The similarity to your problem is this: In addition to what I have
described, AC will burn correctly to CDs (including spanning several CDs)
but not DVDs. It will copy only a few files to a DVD. I am currently
getting help from their online support. I hope they can come up with a
solution. If not, I will have to discontinue AC because I sometimes need
System Support and I do not trust any software that changes my system. I
was going to try Nero next, but your message makes me want to rethink that
option.

David, I can't offer any specific help other than to suggest asking in the
comp.publish cdrom.software group. Nero is always being discussed there and
you might get some help from those guys.

Most people have gone back to Nero 5.5

Quite agree. I tried installing Nero 6 and immediately went to bluescreen at
the reboot. There were probable hardware conflicts, which I'm guessing might
have been connected to the virtual drive that is installed, but I'm not
sure. Anyway, it spooked me enough to stay away and keep using 5.5.10.35,
which never gives a problem.

What happens when you delete both drives in device manager? They should be
correctly ID'd when redetected by Windows. Once Windows knows what they are,
the other software will figure it out.

OK...first....get another DEMO copy of Nero and re-install it. Next
evaluate the functionality of your system again. If all is
restored...then run regedit.exe (found in windows) and search registry
for Nero keys...(nero*.*) etc. Then try to un-install it. If it
doesn't work then check the keys you found and delete them.

Also, after un-installing nero, you can try re-installing your main
DVD programs to correct faults.

I can tell you nero has some strange programs running in some strange
places.

Either will work. Both started out buggy and were patched to fix most of the
problems. Some people still don't trust the latest version or see no reason
to change, but I've had excellent results with what is now Nero 6.3.

the
reason

In looking thought my Nero 5 maual, it does not make ANY reference
to DVD. I currently do not have this installed on my new PC
but seem to remember on the old PC that there was no reference to DVD
writing. Are you sure I can write DVD-Video using Nero 5.5?

My new PC has the ATI All-in-wonder 9000 Pro card and it came with
a bundled set of software including Ulead VideoStudio 7.0 Se, Pinnacle
studio 8, and Nero express 5.5
This Nero express also has no support for DVD writing (that I can see).

with

If you install a DVD burner, Nero should offer you the option to use it. DVD
writing is most certainly supported by Nero 5.5, as a quick trip to the
Ahead website will confirm. I'm not sure whether you need a patch (always
advisable,) or reinstall (sometimes the only way to get the damn thing to
work right, espcially if you change hardware.)

DVD

I know that if I install Nero, it will require me to uninstall Nero Express.
Can I assume that after the install
1. Nero 5.5 will do everything that Nero Express does today?
2. Nero 5.5 will detect that I have a DVD burner (Pioneer A06)?
3. Nero 5.5 will let me take the contents of a VIDEO_TS directory and burn a
DVD-Video?

PS I used DVDshrink to copy the DVD contents to hard drive. I am attempting
to create
a DVD-video using Uload MovieFactory 2 but for some reason it thinks it
needs to
render (re-sample?) the mpg files again and it is taking several hours to do
so.
This step seems unnecessary if DVDshrink already converted the files into
the required size in the output VIDEO_TS directory.

Yes, Yes and Yes. I like 6.3, but if the 5.5 upgrade is easier or cheaper it
will do the job.

do

I've never used MF2, so I can't help you there. The simplest way to get
where you want to go is to launch Nero Burning Rom and create a new
DVD-Video. That opens a window that will let you drag and drop the files
created by DVD Shrink to the VIDEO_TS folder and burn away at full speed.

burn
it

I am confused.
I installed the retail Nero 5.5 version and nowhere does it make any
reference
to burning data to a DVD, only CD's.
So either Nero 5.5 does not support DVD's or I am missing something.

2.DVD does not recognize DVD disk in drive unless system booted with DVD in drive

MANY people are posting on the issue of their DVD Rom or DVD burner not reading DVDs. The symptoms are the the DVD does not autoplay and attempts to get it to play usually result in a message "please insert disc into drive X:" even though the disc is inserted.

After a lot of web searching, I've discovered a workaround that works consistently. Boot the machine with a DVD in the DVD Rom or DVD burner. For that boot, the DVD drive will work normally. Boot without a DVD in the drive and the drive will not read DVDs.

This is a workaround only. I still want a fix.

This looks like a bug in the DVD drivers or the OS, more likely the OS since I've used two different drivers without any affect.

Another possibility is that there is something left over in the registry after removing some software or hardware that causes this problem. I recently changed my motherboard from a SOYO dragon lite to an ASUS A7N8X-E. At about the same time, I removed my CD-RW and replaced with a second DVD-RW.

Anybody out there have any better ideas on a real fix for this problem.

3.Drive acts as DVD drive for cd and CD Drive for dvd off and on

My disk drive says all my drivers are up to date, so that's not the problem.
I have a brand new Toshiba satellite notebook and I'm running Vista Home
Premium. Every so often when I put in a cd-rw to copy some files, only the D:
drive - the DVD burner shows and it formats as a DVD. Vice versa with the
DVD-RW: it shows only the E: drive - the CD-RW drive. I can't figure out how
to tell this computer which media it's supposed to be recognizing. Can
someone help??

4.My dvd drive on my dell studio 17 is no longer seen by vista

I have a Dell studio 17 laptop that no longer reconise the dvd drive, I was
told that a solution existed on the Microsoft knowadge site and when I
followed what it said I found that the registry entry for the dvd drive had
been deleted.

I have e-mailed microsoft tech support about half a dozen time asking how to
correct this problem and I have heard nothing from them.

Please does anybody know how I can renter the the missing section in to the
registry.

5.DVD Not Seen Via My Computer in DVD drive

I have a Compaq Presario c300 using Windows XP. I can see the DVD
drive in BIOS and Device Manager. However, when I place a DVD movie
or software CD in the drive, the Autoplay does not turn on, nor can I
see the DVD/CD files, or play the movie via My Computer. It simply
prompts me to either format or eject the DVD/CCD.

When I access the DVD drive directly through Media Player or HP's
Video Software, it does see the movie and will play it.

Any suggestions on how to make the DVD drive see the CD/DVD that is
inserted into it via My Computer or to have it automatically
detected? Thank you for your time.
