When I shut down my computor, my clock and date go back to the same time every time I restart. Feb. 8, 1999. That must be when this old computor was made. It keeps time when I change it and work on it. Just when I shut it down fot the night and start up the next day. Please someone tell me what to do?
  • 2. Files to be written to CD
I copied some files that were to be written to CD. Now when it comes up it won't let me copy them because the files are too big. Neither will it let me delete the folder. I tried to copy it to DVD & it won't do that either. Also tried moving them to another partition out of the way & can't do that. How can I get them out of the files to be written to CD folder? Now when I put something else there to be written it won't let me do that either because the files are too big. HELP -- Ruth
  • 3. Does Earthlink mail store message folders and addressbook on the local C drive ?
(Sorry for the xpost to a MS group, buy AFAIKT the earthlink groups are not very active.) I've been asked to recover docs and address book data from a now non-bootable C drive for someone. I've found everything but the Earthlink material, and I've never used Earthlink, myself. She says she didn't use any of the POP-type mail clients, TB, netsacpe, OE, Outlook, etc, and if it's web mail everything is on the server of course. Does Earthlonkl give the users the choice of of earthlink's own software ? where does it store it's data and how can I dump the address book and mail folders into something usefull ? -- a d y k e s @ p a n i x . c o m Don't blame me. • 4. Access to folder 'access is denied"
I had to re-image my machine. Two physical drives; I formatted and reinstalled the OS on the primary drive. The secondary drive remains intact with the current file structure. The primary is formatted FAT32 (bad choice for many reasons) and the secondary NTFS. I can access all folders and files on the secondary drive except those in my user directory. "access is denied". Is there a way to change at the "system level" the permissions of this folder to allow access?

What can I do?

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to print a document from Microsoft Internet Explorer or
from Microsoft Outlook Express, you may experience the following behaviors:
* It does not print.
* When you click Print Preview on the File menu, a blank page is displayed.

However, if you try to print the same document from another program, it
prints correctly.

CAUSE
This behavior may occur if the margin settings in the Internet Explorer Page
Setup dialog box are too high. This may cause the margins to encompass the
entire page, which produces a blank page because the page is comprised
entirely of margin space.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, reset the margins to their default settings:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the File menu, click Page Setup.
3. In the Left box, type .75.
4. In the Right box, type .75.
5. In the Top box, type .75.
6. In the Bottom box, type .75.
7. Click OK.

You probably rebooted. This can fix/restore/reinitialize/refresh a lot of
things.

You may want to check out the following Release Notes for SP2:
 http://www.**--****.com/

Here is an excerpt related to print preview and printing a web page:

Printing Error on Web Pages Containing ActiveX Controls
You cannot print or print preview a Web page that includes an ActiveX
object. If you attempt to do so, the Local Machine Zone Lockdown incorrectly
blocks your print functions, and a message saying that ActiveX is blocked
appears in the print-preview window.

To print the page, turn off Local Machine Zone Lockdown by setting the
registry key for this function, as described in "Changes to Functionality in
Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows XP" on the TechNet Web site.

Important:
Because turning off Local Machine Zone Lockdown exposes your computer to
greater security risk, you should turn it back on immediately after you
finish printing the page.

3.Print preview and printing in Internet explorer quit working

If this is a relatively recent issue, you might try using System Restore to
take you back to a time when this worked properly. If that doesn't resolve
it, try the information below.

The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, try a repair install as follows:

Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.
