We've got a number of PCs which stay on permanently and are running WinXP sp2. They don't use DHCP as they have static TCIP/IP settings for IP address and DNS servers. After a period of a few months, some of these PCs are vansihing from DNS. The missing DNS host entries will come back if we either reboot the PC or run IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS on the PC. The DNS is hosted on Win2k3 R2 Server and has scavenging of old DNS records set at 7 days. This doesn't seem to be the cause of the vanishing records though as they only vanish after the PC has been up for months. How / when does WinXP refresh its DNS records if its not using DHCP ? We don't have any issues with our servers, so I suspect there is something different in the XP OS networking. Thanks Mark.
  • 2. Strange networking issue
Hello All, We have several laptops (WinXP) that connect to a Server 2003 domain, all works fine. The problem arises when users want to take these laptops off campus and connect to any wireless connection. It connects, but they can go anywhere, DNS I know! We have checked all the basics, and looked at all the DNS settings and cannot find anything. The real strange part is before you connect to our domain, all works, the minute you connect to the domain and then disconnect for some other wireless, it's almost like those DNS settings "stick" even though they are not in TCP/IP properties. Anyone help? Thank you in advance, AceMan
  • 3. Can't find host server
Have two wireless computers side by side. One is fine, another can't connect to the internet. The adapter is connected and shows "Excellent Connection". Upconfig shows everything: gateway.2wire.net, IP address, Subnet mask and default gateway are fine. Yet, when I ping I have "host server can't be found" I tried google.com and many others. Brower always says "can't find server". Any ideas? Thanks
  • 4. Password Issue when sharing files between VISTA & XP machines
My home network consists of 2 computers, a VISTA machine that is wired to my router and an XP machine that uses a wireless adaptor. I am trying to share files between both computers. I have them both assigned to the same workgroup. There is no problem accessing the folders that are on the VISTA machine from the XP machine. When I try to access the files on the XP machine from the VISTA machine, I am asked for a password & user name. (I didn't think this was necessary since I am using XP Home edition). When I enter the user name and password that I use for logon to the XP machine, I get an error that the Password or User name are not recognized. I suspect that the problem is with Windows or the way I am entering the user name because I know that I am entering the password correctly (spelling and case) I have tried enter the user name a variety of ways: 1. I have tried just entering the user name since the dialog box already acknowledges the Computer name. 2. CHRIS\KenS (where CHRIS is the computer name and KenS is the user) Any help would be appreciated

Windows XP Server?

Postby Kris » Thu, 05 Feb 2004 19:58:37 GMT

Hi,
Is it possible to install some services integrated in
Windows Server 2003 on a Windows XP system? I have been
testing Windows 2003 on my workstation and webservices,
mailserver, domainserver,.... are very intresting for me.
But my problem is, I only have a license on Windows XP Pro
and Windows 2003 isn't the best choice to use on a
workstation.
So my question is : How can I use these things on XP.
I'm running a homenetwork (4PC's, 2laptops)

No! You cannot install services from Windows Server 2003 on XP. You can
however find third party add ons designed for XP for many services. You will
NOT be able to make you XP box a domain controller, but you should be able
to find a 3rd party mail server that can run on XP.

I removed the users and removed the profiles removed it from the domain and

5.Printer sharing from Vista client to Windows XP server

Hello
I tried to setup printer sharing on a windows XP desktop (connect to an HP
3745 Deskjet printer) and laptops that run either windows XP or Vista. The
windows XP laptops are able to print fine.

Print sorta works on the Vista laptop but not quite - the printout is on the
wrong side of the page and reversed (characters are reversed and print right
to left, so the document reads fine if you read it from the backside of the
page!). Is this a problem with the driver that the Vista laptop downloaded,
or something else? thanks for your thoughts
