Network between Laptop & Desktop
by Sm9l » Wed, 19 May 2004 09:06:03 GMT
Hello Everyone
I had a little problem with my Laptop and the only way to fix it is re-installing everything. Unfortunately, I have gygas of information I don't want to lose (mainly, MP3), and one of the spoiled parts of the Laptop is my Disk Drive. I want to transfer my information from my Laptop to my computer, but I don't know how to make a network, or Lan, or whatever this transfer of information is called. I'll be very grateful if someone could tell me what must I have to have and do in order to transfer information between my 2 computers. Thanks in advance.

The simplest way is to buy an Ethernet Crossover Cable ( note this differs
from an Ethernet Straight-through Cable ). Both the laptop and desktop will
need an Ethernet card.
Configure each Ethernet card with a valid IP ( 192.168.0.1 mask
255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0 ). You then test the
connectivity between the two ( Ping 192.168.0.1 ). If this receives
replies, then its just a matter of copying your files across.

I tried what you tell me, however, when I plugged the Crossover Cable in both computers, they seemed not to recognize it. Perchance you know what is missing? I would like to say also that I don't know where you configure the IP adress. I know it is frustrating and that I should take electronic classes, but I will be very thankful if someone could help me with this.

2.Help with a networking question - laptop/desktop connection.
We have a workgroup in our office with 6 computers on it. No one is able to
access anyone else's computer. The reason for the setup is to give us
access to network printer and have broadband access.
I have a laptop that I can connect to the network and worked out a way to
have the my laptop and desktop able to share each other's My Documents
folders. But I also found that anyone else could do the same.
How can I share files on these two computers without having other machines
on the workgroup able to access them?
I am running XP Pro and using FAT32.
3.Desktop can't see laptop, Laptop can see Desktop (home premium network issues)
4.Desktop can ping laptop but laptop can't ping desktop
This one is driving me crazy. I have two computers (a desktop and a laptop)
which share a cable modem connection via a Linksys router. The router is
connected to the cable modem with ethernet cable. The desktop is connected
to the router with ethernet cable, and the laptop is connected to the router
with 802.11b Wi-Fi. The router is configured on the LAN side as
192.168.1.1, and gets the WAN IP address from the cable system. The router
runs DHCP to assign LAN IP addresses to each computer. The desktop is
192.168.1.100, and the laptop is 192.168.1.101. Both computers can access
the Internet flawlessly. The problem is, I can't get the computers to share
data with each other. Both computers are WinXP Home, and are in the same
workgroup. I don't think the problem is NetBIOS, I think there's some sort
of route table involved. Here's why: I can ping the router from the
desktop; I can ping the laptop from the desktop; I can ping the router from
the laptop; but I CAN NOT ping the desktop from the laptop.
5.Desktop Wireless network connection "bounces" when laptops join wireless network
I have a desktop (WinXP) with a 802.11b Belkin wireless card connecting
to a linksys wireless b router in my house. I have 3 roommates with
laptop and desktop computers that connect to the network fine every
time. My desktop, connects perfectly with solid, strong signal for as
long as the 2 laptops with integrated wireless nic cards are not on.
Whenever either of these two (fairly new, 3-5 months old) laptops joins
the wireless network, my connection bounces around like a super ball.
My connection status on the desktop goes from high to low to medium
back to low. I would say most the time it is LOW though. I can still
surf a few pages but it is so slow, it is just not worth it, but some
packets do get through in both directions. This is the part I don't
understand. It almost seems as though these laptops are somehow
"interfering" with my desktops wireless card.
I am a techie and have tried the obvious troubleshooting steps such as
changing IP addresses, updating drivers, using DHCP (I prefer to have a
static IP address, but changing to DHCP doesn't change the problem).
One more thing, there are two other computers that have no problems
ever on the network (1 desktop, and 1 older (5 yrs) notebook with a
PCMCIA Wireless G card).
Any ideas or suggestions on what I can try would be appreciated. Or
even some search terms I can try and google to find others who might
have had similar issues with the wireless lan.
Thanks,
Aaron
