  • 1. defrag and scan disk
I am using Windows XP Pro. I have started having a problem where I can not run the defragmenter on my computer. If I use "Run" and type in "defrag", I get a flash on the screen and then return to the desk top. If I run defrag from the performance area, the defrag screen comes up and I can analyze the hard drive but when I try to compact it, it does nothing. This has just started. Is there something I can do to fix it or should I just restort to an earlier time. Thanks
  • 2. SP2 Update hangs at "Creating restore point"
I did an XP repair install on my and have since been unable to update to SP2. It happens the same way every time. I run IE and Tools->Windows Update and it goes to back up the system and reports "Creating Restore Point". The hard drive is active for a while, and the blue progress bar gets about a third of the way to completion. Then the HD light goes out and the system is messed up as partly described here: Can move the mouse pointer. The blue bar at the top of the "Installing Updates" window flashes upon mouse clicks. Can't kill or minimize the IE window. Can't call up the Start menu. System doesn't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del or to Power button. The only option seems to be to unplug the computer and reboot. Other: Dell Dimension 4500, 40G drive, 26 G free space. Check disk reports no errors. Any ideas what is wrong?
  • 3. System files

  • 4. XP won't start - 0x0000007b (0xfafe7528, 0xc0000034)
My computer crashed and I can't restart in any mode! I tried using the repair option from the reinstall disc and I also tried to do a recovery. Nothing works. Any ideas before I do a reinstallation? I have files that I do not want to lose...
  • 5. wanting to reformat hard drive
hi, Trying to reformat hard drives as there is some corrupt software that I can't remove on the hard drive. Have done it before a few times, but have since had the computer up-graded by a friend. The computer doesn't appear to be booting up from the start - up disk or from a dos disk. Could someone talk me through getting the computer to load up from the floppy. Thanks, Lisa

Cannot hear sound when I turn off my computer and turn it back on

Postby meadow » Thu, 30 Oct 2003 22:58:53 GMT

When I turn off my computer and turn it back on, I cannot
hear sound.
My Installation CD is labeled Sound Blaster Live! Value
Digital 1024 Software.
I can reinstall the program and hear sound, but if I turn
off my computer and turn it back on again I cannot hear
sound.
When I cannot hear sound and I view Sound and Audio
Devices Properties, under Default Device, I view "Modem #0
Line Playback".
Thank you for your help,
meadow

Click the down arrow next to modem #0 to get a drop down menu.
Are there any other devices listed ?

You are shutting xp down properly I hope, you;re not just turning off the
power ?
