I can join my XP workstation to the 2003 domain; browse mapped drives on the server; print etc but I can't reach the workstation from the server or anywhere else. I can't even ping the workstation although I get a reply when I ping the server from the workstation. Any ideas as this one is baffling me?
  • 2. ALLOWING USERS TO RUN APPLICATIONS FROM THEIR DESKTOPS
I have 4 users in a Domain with their own accounts and profiles. I am a local administrator for each PC. Programs we are loading range from DOS folders w/ executables, batch files and applications developed in VB.NET. That being said, when I add shortcuts to the all user folder and then have each user login and try, the ICONS are transparent and don't work. How do I resolve this problem so that each user can run programs under their account? In addition, users can not have poweruser or administrative rights. Thanks-- mmitchmcp

Keep loosing the connection between win2000 server and xp pro pcs. When I look in the servers event viewer it says that the PC tryed to connect using the tust relationship established by the server, however the computer lost its security ID when the domain was reconfigured (SID). when was the domain reconfigured? this is a random even as a pc can lose the relationship in one minute or a week later?? who do I fix this annoying problem?? thanks Marcel
  • 4. Norton AntiVirus 2006 does not support the repair feature
I have installd Norton Internet Security 2006 from cd. Installation and activation is completed although pre install scan failed with zero viruses found. I selected "install with parental control and using windows accounts". I am getting the above mentioned error in trying to log into the limited access windows accounts on my pc. I do not get the error on my own administrator account. I have removed and reinstalled several times. The error does not appear if I change every account to "administrator". Symantec technical support have been terrible in their efforts to help. I have read and followed to the letter every available Symantec document on the subject (which seems to be getting revised on a daily basis). This is going on for the last three weeks and I am not at the end of my patience. HELP PLEASE -- Phil

Event Viewer cannont connect to remote WinXP SP2 event viewer

Postby Russell » Sun, 29 Oct 2006 01:07:33 GMT

Within Event Viewer, Select Connect to Another Computer.

I successfully connect to any remote Windows 2003 or 2000 event viewer logs
. I always fail when connecting to remote WinXP SP2 machines. Error is:

Unable to connect to the computer "computer name or ip address here" There
error was Access Denied.

I am logged to local PC with a domain account that is member of Domain
Admins. All PCs are domain members. I have turned off Windows Firewall on
remote Win XP machines. This is all being done on a private LAN segment.
I'm stumped and would appreciate any suggestions. thanks.

Hi,

From your description, it appears that the "remote registry" service is not
running.

Please run "services.msc" and find "remote resigry" service to start it.

Then, check this issue again.

Thanks for suggestion. I confirmed that is "remote registery" service is
already running on all the WinXP SP2 PCs. So that is not the problem.
Further thoughts?

i,

Go to the following registry key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\Winreg

Check if the Local Service account have Query Value, Enumnerate Subkeys,
Notify, and Read Control allowed permission.

Thanks.

OW!! I would have never figured that out. That fixed it.

Further info: the Local Service account permission that you identified was
being lost when we joined a PC to the domain. We had to use a computer
group policy to correct the problem.

Thank you very much!

1.Event Viewer - can not see list of events when open Event Viewer

Has anyone ever experienced a problem when opening Event Viewer and clicking
on Application log, where the right-hand pane never shows the list of
events?? This also seems to happen on the System log.

If I click on the Security log the list will propagate if I click the
refresh button but if I try refresh on the other two logs nothing happens. It
looks like the log is propagating because the scroll bar gets small (like its
collecting data and "wants" to show it) but the screen doesn't refresh.

I'm presently having this problem on a Windows 2000 box, I've seen this on a
Windows 2003 box before but can't recall what the fix was.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions are appreciated

2.View server Event Log with remote event viewer

Testing hardware setting:
1 2k3 dc, 1 2k3 member server, 1 2k client

I would like to use the Event Viewer MMC in the client to view the event log
of the 2k3 member server. Actually i can achieve this goal by using the
following setting
1. Create a domain user (e.g. John) in the dc
2. using GPO to allow him to use "Event viewer" snap-in.
3. in the member server, put John as the member of the local administrators
group.

Basically i can do what i want with the above setting, however, besides
viewing log of the member server, i want to restrict John as tight as
possible (i think putting John as the member of local administrators group
may gave him too much power). Here i want to ask:

Can i achieve the same goal without granding John administratative
permission? (The best way should be configure through GPO setting)

Thanks and regards

4.Error appearing in the Event viewer (event id: 1058 & event id: 10

Dear all,

I would appreciate any help in diagnosing and resolving this error. Logged
in as an administrator on a windows xp sp2 laptop and the above errors appear
during the boot in the event viewer. I am logging on to the domain and I do
not receive any errors on-screen.

They say that they cannot access the group policy but I have checked that
the file exists and that I have access to the folder.

Any ideas or is there a better group to post in?
