This happened today. When I click on sol.exe I see only a green screen with no cards displayed. By way of the Control Panel, Add and Delete area, I have removed and reinstalled the games section of Windows 98 several times to no avail. I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows - it looks like more of a job than I could cope with. Thanks for any help you can give. Evelyn

can some one tell me how to do this? I don't understand the instuctoins.... pat To create a clean environment for troubleshooting Click Diagnostic startup - interactively load device drivers and software, click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer. The Windows 98 Startup Menu will appear in MS-DOS format when your machine restarts. Select Step-by-step confirmation from the menu options, and process all but the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files. If this option causes your computer to stop responding, restart the computer, select Step-by-step confirmation again, and process all but the Autoexec.bat file. Some computers will not start properly without processing the Config.sys file. After Windows 98 starts, determine whether the symptoms are still present. Note

cant create boot disc

Postby Rao Mulukutla » Tue, 12 Aug 2003 01:47:56 GMT

I have oem Gateway computer with win 98 since 1999 with
256Mb ram and 550Mhz processor. My boot disc got
corrupted and tried to create one from add/remove programs
facility. I have the following error messages while
creating a boot disc: got the 'cant find' msgs as below:
winboot.sys
autoexec.ebd
config.ebd
readme.ebd
setramd.ebd
and last one after skipping the above was@: 'setup
detected an error while reading c:\winbd0.400
\ebd\autoexec.bat

Can anybody help what this means? I am not a techie.

Many thanks
Rao

You need to have the Windows CD in the drive before creating the boot disk

As for the error with the autoexec.bat file, can't say anything detailed
without knowing the exact error message.

Don't use the Add\Remove Programs utility to create your boot diskette.

Insert your Windows CD in the drive while holding down the Shift key on the keyboard for 10 seconds, to by-pass autorun.
Open Windows Explorer and open this folder on the CD:
\tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd
Double-click the file "fat32ebd.exe" ans insert a blank floppy disk when prompted.

Thanks Glen, I have succesfully created a fat32 boot disc.
Tried to boot with the boot disc (and win 98 cd-rom in
drive). After chosing with or without cd-rom support it is
terminating at A:\ prompt and not loading windows. What
should I do now?

The boot disk does not start Windows. What you do now depends on why you
are booting to a boot disk. Do you need to investigate a problem with the
hard drive, or re-install your operating system, or restore your system from
a backup copy or something similar?

If you simply want to prove that you have a working bootdisk then all you
need to do is access the CD ROM and make sure you can see the files. Note
that the CD ROM drive letter may be different than you are used to under
Windows - often it increases by one. Type something like DIR E: to proves
that you can access the CD.

A Jeff said, what are you trying to do?
The boot disk boots you to an A:\ prompt. If you are trying to install Windows, you must switch to the drive letter of the CD drive, which will be noted on-screen just above the A:\ prompt. If the CD-ROM drive letter is D:, then at the A:\ prompt type: D: and press Enter. At the D:\ prompt type: setup and Windows setup will begin.
